Getting an EVO tonight....Newbie has some ??'s

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to this site and I just had a few questions I was wondering if someone could help me out. I currently own a 2005 Cadillac CTS-V and am going to head down the the Mit. dealership tonight afterwork to trade it for an EVO. My questions are the following:

1.) I know the VIII has a 5-spd tranny and the MR has a 6-spd tranny. What are the differences in ratios between the 2? Is it just 6th gear or are they completely different in each gear?

2.) I really want the Electric Blue VIII with Sunroof, etc., but wondering what performance differences there are between the VIII and the MR? I am going to be upgrading this car immediately, but not too extreme (for now).

Thank you very much.

all and all the 6 speed isnt worth it.. plus the 5 speed is stronger.. even though ours trans do suck if you beat them too hard.. well they dont like excessive beating that is..

Cool. The 4-6 gears are smaller. So the MR pulls faster on the highway.
Performance difference wasnt noticable to me when I was in my friends MR just pulls better from 80MPH up 2 160! if you want you can get INTAKE, full exhaust and a flash and your gonna be running 12s

Did you search? This topic has been beaten to death. Dfarmer is right in saying that the 5 speed is made stronger.

I did do a search and read a few things, but this is great feedback. Sorry for beating a dead horse.

The feedback is greatly appreciated and I thank you all.

Good luck on your purchase tonight. There's a reason the Evo IX is going back to the 5-speed, and that's because, as stated, it's a stronger tranny. Personally, I need to be pulling hard before 80 MPH, so the lower end pull is more important to me. I know the MR has some other goodies the straight VIII doesn't, but it all depends on what you're willing to spend the money on. If you're going to mod immediately, save the money from the MR and go with the VIII. No matter what you do, it's still an Evo and that rocks.

Nez...that's cool to hear. I've never heard any first-hand accounts of the differences between the two with comparable mods. How many people will ditch the VIII to go with the MR, right? Nice.

the 6 speed feels better, has smoother shifts and just has a better positive feel IMO compared to the 5 speed (and yes all ratios are different from the 5spd). overall the MR seems more refined than other evos from what i have experienced. mitsu said the 5spd can handle more torque than the 6spd but you should never have problems with your transmission going out on you unless you put $25k+ into engine mods and you drag a lot.

if you are dead set on the EB w/sunroof, go for it & dont look back, but the MR is a great car just like every other evo (hey, it gets my approval :P)

Dude are you crazy to trade that car in? That thing is 400hp and RWD. The CTS-V is a awsome car. What are your reasons?
