Some general questions

I am new to this forum and I am looking to buy either an evo or an sti for my new daily driver/beater car. I have some questions about the evo and wanted to get your guys opinions.

How reliable is the evo is left pretty much stock?

Was there any changes made from 03 to the 05 evos? I know with my s4 in 2001.5 they eliminated the f hose, upgraded the oil lines and crap like that to make them a little more reliable. Through reading the posts it looks like they put a bigger housing on the 05 making them a little faster.

Anyone have any experience with evo vs sti as far as reliability goes?

If you were buying a new/used evo would you go with a 03-04 or a new 05? I know they eliminated the ic sprayer and adjustable hids in 05.

Do you guys have a lot of problems with theft and vandalism with these cars?

I am just worried about reliability daily driving the car. I have a gti vr6 that I daily drive now and I am constantly working on it fixing little things that go wrong and some major things (VW go figure). Parts for the car are fairly expensive and most you have to get at a dealer or online, can not just walk into AutoZone for the crap. A few of my friends have evos and have not really had problems but I would like to hear what other peoples experience are with the cars.

Any info would be great.

TIA

05's have more powere due to a couple of changes. As far as reliability, MITSU has the best warranty provided you don't mod it up. I looked at the STI and the EVO. Drove them both and chose the EVO MR (It does have the adjustable HIDs) and a better suspension package. A recent test in a magazine had the EVO blowing away the Suby on the track.

I love my 05 as a daily driver. 13K mi on it since last october. No problems what so ever. My evo is completely stock performance wise, and I enjoy every mile. there are some really high mileage evos out there...

That is my concern buying a used evo. Most people I see around my area driving them are kids and beat the **** out of the cars.

As far as theft I know my s4 is a prime target for theft. A ton of people on audiworld from the pa/nj/ny area have gotten thier cars stolen more then once. Does the 05 still have the immobilizer’s?

The reliability factor is mostly how hard you drive it and how well you maintain it. (spark plugs, fluid changes, and clean air filter) This goes for all cars and not just Evolutions.

If you don't want to repair it as much as a race car than don't drive it like one. That is exactly what this car is though, a race car. Keep that in mind.

I have on 03 that is stock but for an MR Suspension and SSR wheels. I have driven it daily up until the last few months. Like most early 03 EVOs it had to have its gearbox rebuilt (which was done by Mitsu under warranty). Other than the gearbox the car has been bulletproof as a daily driver. If you can find an 03 that has had it's gearbox rebuilt and has not been beaten on (hard to tell this actually) it's a steal at a price in the low 20s. If you can swing it a new 05 MR is the way to go. My EVO is way more reliable than either of my last two Audis, the last of which was returned under PA's lemon law.
