2006 "5000 RPM drag-launch rev limiter" removal?

Hi, I am an occasional lurker on this site. I actually almost bought an Evo 8 when they first came here, but Mitsu dealer wanted 3K markup, so I went across the street and bought a 2003 Cobra for $6000 less. Anyway, I am glad I didn't buy that 8 because the MR finally made it here!

I was reading in a recent magazine that the 2006 Evo has a 5000 RPM drag launch limiter to prevent drag-racing redline launches since Mitsubishi USA was getting stuck with a lot of warranty claims for transmission. Because of this, the magazine could not even get decent 0-60 times. Maybe it said 4000 RPM, don't quote me on the 5000 just yet, but I know in the review the guy was bummed out that he couldn't launch the thing with the limiter on it!

Has anyone else heard about the limiter, and if so does anyone have any ideas for removing it or that has removed it?

Mike

Yes, I believe it can be removed with a Flash.

Search it, my friend. They started this on the 2005s, and I have written many posts on the effects of it as well as how to defeat it. Of course, I learned how to defeat it by reading other threads here on EvoM, so I don't claim any credit for it or anything. Some are able to launch USING it as a stutterbox while others (like me) disconnect a switch so that we can launch at 6k.

See what I heard is that the 05 MR cant have the rev limiter taken off unless you dissconnect afew things, but the 06 would not have one at all, they said that you can drop it at 7k if you like and the clucth and tranny would love it. Also I heard that the A-spec 06 would not have the rear difuser, the only thing different is the Mivec, the turbo housing, and that no suspension changes would be made from the 05.

You disconnect one switch.

I don't know of any clutch/tranny that would "love" 7k dumps...

how do you make the rev limit on 2005 evo's go to 6k??? i know u can unplug the plug at the top of the clutch lever, but is there any other way??? It would be nice if you could put a resistor in the line and just adjust it...

The only way I know is unplugging the switch. Yes, it would be nice if it could be adjusted to 5500 or 6000 for nice stutterbox launches...

u can still launch the car good with the rev limiter, i still manage to do 1.8 sec 60 foot times and run low 13's. i have seen too many people doing 6000rpm and up launches and then complain about burning clutch and broken transmition.

but yes u can unplug a switch above the clutch pedal to disable the rev limiter which i wouldn t recommend if u car about your transmition and clutch.

Doing it at only 5k requires you to slip it a lot, because anything below 5500rpm isn't enough to launch with the power we have. You don't destroy the tranny/clutch just from launching at the proper rpm...only if you dump it from 6k+. 1.8 60's and low 13 (13.0-13.1) are only acceptable if the 05 is stock, too.

they say, every 1/10th in the 60" is 2 1/10's in the 1/4. and that worked perfectly for me in my talon. I ran 12.7 with a 1.7 60ft. but i made another pull right after that one and pulled a 1.8 60ft and the car ran 12.9. trap speeds were almost identical.

It's not always 2:1, but it's almost always more than 1:1...

well excuse me for my ****ty 1.8 60' on a stock 05, but i really dont like abusing the car on launches that s all. some poeple at the track where i go to have a act street clutch and just need to launchthe car at 4500 to get a 1.7 60' times.

anyway u guys do whatever u want, but let s ee whose transmition and diffs last the longest.
