i hate cars

i am bored and tired of trying to figure out what i should do. this fall im gonna have my car paid off and i want something new. ive been wanting the evo for awhile but don't know with insurance, which i still need to check on, and cost of maintanence is it really that bad? a definate plus would be the not too shabby mpg but how much, not including modding, is the upkeep on y'alls evos? if i'm just doing normal driving and not beatin the hell outta it except every now and then and only PLAN on modding a lil what do yall think?

I haven't owned mine that long, but from what I've gathered, I don't think maintenance of the Evo is as high as other performance cars.

I'll give you a hint about insurance... It's cheaper to insure my 911 than the Evo simply because the cost of collision coverage on an Evo is so damn high--everything else isn't that bad. I'm guessing collision is so high b/c a lot of inexperienced drivers hop in an Evo and go crazy until it gets away from them and BOOM. Then there goes all of our insurance rates...

Definitely check insruance rates before you buy. I have a spotless driving record after 10 years and a good driver discount and my rate still kind of sucks. That's after shopping around too.

EDIT: ...And one more thing... Don't let any car salesmen try to tell you that the Evo's insurance costs the same as a regular Lancer. I heard a salesman try to tell me that when I went to buy and I laughed in his face because I had already checked the rates. Those shady bastards will say or do anything to sell a car.

Expensive stock tires and stock brakes can lead to expensive cost of ownership. As far as the insurance, I'm not paying any more for my 05 EVO than I was for my 01 S2k. It depends on the region, your age, and the amount of coverage.

Well, that certainly could be part of it. But the real reason is the big intercooler hanging off the front of the car, plus the aluminum fenders, plus high performance brakes and struts. Since most collisions occur in the front of the car, the Evo is more expensive to repair than just about any car on the road. The NHTSA site lists the Evo as a 514, with the average car being a 100 in regards to average repair costs per incident. Simply put: when an Evo crashes, it is expensive to repair. More than any other car, including the 911.

maintanece on my old 03 was high but when I bought the 05 they take care of everything even with my mods (note this is only maintance stuff, I dare not to ask if I were to have a prob with the car) When I bought the car it had free maintanece at no extra cost to me for 100k miles. I cant argue with that.

Insurance = 110 month (thats paying month to month, not in 6 month chuncks)! thats also with my 05 evo MR and wifes 05 mazda 3. This is with 500 dec on evo and 1k on mazda full coverage for both cars.

My buddy just saved 1000 bucks every year by switching to geico.

well, there's the other alternative... enjoy your paid off car and use it to get into R/C racing. You can easily spend more than $1000 bucks on a nice setup whether offroad or onroad. Its cars, its modding, its tuning, its RACING at a world level if you're good enough, plus its HECK of a lot cheaper to buy tires/rims/motors/mods for the R/C's than for an evo.

I find myself thinking... new 18's or R/C car stuff..hhmmmm, exhaust or R/C car stuff, hmmm, carbon trunk or R/C car stuff....so far my Evo is stock.

AND YOU"LL NEVER GET BORED cuz there's ALWAYS something to do in R/C.

well if your over 25 yrs old insurance wont be bad considering the evo is a sports car. Now as far as upkeep on the car its not that bad unless your beating the day light out of it and having to replace clutches and transfer cases with each oil change. I have had my evo since 03 and have 18000 miles on it with no issues other than the fact I have spent mucho $ on mods. So to sum it up for you: Evo great car and avery addictive like crack hehehhee!!!! Good luck

A lot more to it than just the cost of repair. Even the Evo, as special as it is, does not cost 5 times more to repair than the average car just because of an intercooler. Tons of extra sensors and headlamp washers on European cars in that same loss data make those European cars much more expensive to repair in a frontal crash. Many more seperate pieces.
That 514 number, which is the total loss number, mainly reflects the severity and number of occurences of the crashes of that model. If you notice, the other two of the five highest cars are the Neon SRT-4 and the WRX, whose numbers are both HALF of what the Evo is. (257 and 287 respectively). That's not because the Evo costs twice as much to repair. Even the Benz CL-class is only a 305. You can't tell me an Evo "simply costs more to repair" than a CL with all of its electronics and sensors up front-- and that's not even counting the much higher price of German parts.

Instead, what the means is that when an Evo crashes, it crashes hard . Since most 911 owners are older than the average Evo owner, they don't have as spectacular of wrecks because they're usually not going as fast... Pretty crazy how actuaries take everything into account statistically like that and spit out a number.

More expensive to fix than a new 911 in an average frontal crash? Depends. On one hand we have a $85k 911, and a $30k Evo, but then there are more parts in the Evo's front end just in sheer numbers. The 911's motor is tucked away in the rear and the parts are still being made in high numbers. Kind of a toss up depending on severity...
More expensive than slightly older, less common air-cooled 911s that were made in lower numbers? No. There were a lot less '93-94 911 C2's made than Evo VIII's. Parts are a ***** to find and don't forget about the premium that is thrown on parts just because they are "Porsche". You pay for the name.

Anyway, insurance for the Evo is ridiculous, but if I cared I wouldn't have bought it.

Insurance will vary because of your driving record, age, and your state, but repair on the Evo is rather pricy. I had a bad weather accident before I replaced my stock Advan tires and I slid into the curb at about 20mph. Two rims quoted by dealer at $575 each, abs sensor, and it broke two splines in the rear axle (rally car, my ***..lol). With dealership labor the hit to my insurance was just under $2600. I just renewed my policy and I didn't notice an increase because that was my first claim in over 7 years. I'm single and over 30 and still pay $155 a month (but I also have a corvette convertible too).

I'm reaching the mileage for a brake job and fully expect to pay $200-300 for that. But I've got over 24k miles (stock) and it has only needed a new set of tires and a few rotations and with the pit pass thrown in when I bought the car all my oil changes are free. A trip to Buschur is in the works so there goes my warranty and my bank account but like the saying goes..."you gotta pay to play".

+1 on that bro. If you wanted something cheap on insurance and low maintenance try modding a honda or acura. I believe most evo owners bought the car for its performance value, not because it is an economical car.
