AutoX gear...
Sorry if this is a repost. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or opinions on a good head bucket. At alot of the autox's ive been to, they required a full face, so that would be choice. Also some expected prices for helmets would also be helpful.
thanks
thanks
Shoei and Arai are at the top of the market there (roughly $300 - #800+). I've heard that Suomy is also good (~$500).. but honestly, don't think that price is everything.
There's been a lot of praise for "lesser" helemts, like Scorpion, Z1, KBC, HJC, etc....
I personally have a KBC (motorcyle only) and it feels great to me. Only $170. Seriously, as long as you get one that's DOT approved you'll be fine - just make sure it fits well. That's the most important thing.
Don't worry about Snell ratings - there's a lot of argument there that I don't really wanna go into. If you wanna hear it, tell me and I'll link ya to an article.
But seriously - DOT approved, good fitment - you'll be fine. Anything after that is just a matter of personal taste.

screw shoei and arai. too expensive.
just get some motorcycle helmet from ebay.
They must be dot approved and snell 2000 approved. (SCCA safety regulation)
in auto-x, there are no real need for those road helmets.
Now Road Racing, solo, you better get something good. Also if you have a rollcage, make sure the helmet is approved for rollcage impact. which means, even while you're driving and hit the rollcage with your helmet, it wont crack.
some are fairely light fiberglass helmets.
I have a snowmobile helmet that's snell and dot approved. got it for under $100.
works great.
" Helmets meeting the following standards must be worn while on course. All helmets meeting the current or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA, M, or K) are acceptable. For 2003 this includes Snell 2000, Snell 1995, or Snell 1990. FIA approved helmets which are acceptable for use in Performance Rally events are acceptable for Solo II events. See Appendix G for Kart helmet rules. For maximum protection, helmets must fit securely and should provide adequate peripheral vision. The chin strap must be securely fastened. Loaner helmets should be available to vehicle occupants not having their own."
Starting almost at the end of 2005, snell 1995, 1990 is no longer excepted.

^^ I agree with you, especially about Shoei and Arai being overpriced. However, I would be pretty hesitant about getting a helmet off Ebay, even if they claim it is new. There's always a big risk in buying a used helmet, and if you choose to do so you should inspect it carefully to make sure it is in excellent condition (i.e. - its structural integrity hasn't been compromised due to a possiblet crash and whatnot.) There are ways of seeing helmet damage, although some damage is more subtle. Know what to look for!
I would go here...

Shoei and Arai helmets are worth the money when riding a motorcycle. Lighter, quiter, more comfortable, and more features. Mute point if you are only wearing the helmet for a short time inside a car though.

If you ever plan on doing track days, you should get a SA2000 rated helmet. The SM2000 (motorcycle) helmets are cheaper and are allowed for autocross, but most track day organizers will not allow them. The main difference between the two is fire rating (motorcycle helmets are not fire resistant). The price difference between the two is usually around $50 to $100, but it would be a bummer to buy a $100 motorcycle helmet and then find out you can't use it at a track day and have to spend another $150 on a SA2000 helmet. Just my 2c.

i got myself this one http://www.racerwholesale.com/catalo...a6d7da2bb1b4f0
yes, the one with flames
, that's prolly the only grafix/vinyl that i'll ever have with my car, besides, flames on the helmet increase ur reflexes and sk!llz by 20%!!!11
it's comfortable and i'm happy with it.=, got it for $120 new from a friend who's a distributor. this can be used on motorbike and snell and dot certified. with more expensive helmets u get what u paid for, but for most ppl something like this is sufficient.

I really like the hybrid autox helmets by bell... only problem is they are only in white!.. does no one make a red autox helmet thats not a fortune? I really just want a plain red or black helmet.

Is this one pretty good? Also it says that full face helmets have been found to be dangerous if the airbag is disabled.. if this is the case i cant believe there are autox that are demanding you have full face helmets.
