Another check engine light question?
Another check engine light question?
Just need some advice/opinions here. My service engine soon light is on and has been for a little while, presumebly because of my TBE w/high flow cat. I am in the process of buying the electronic gizmo that you wire in place of the rear 02 sensor to shut it off. When I got the car inspected, the hooked it up to the computer to do the emissions stuff, but the computer comes back with no codes. I assumed that when the SES light came on the ecu throughs out a code so you can tell what is wrong. Is it possible for the light to come on without the ecu putting out a code? If it is my rear O2 sensor that is thinking there is something wrong because I have a high flow cat and it doesnt know any better, would it set off the light without a code? When I took it to the dealer to get my first oil change I asked them to see why it was on and they told me "it was because of all of my mods", which says to me that they didn't get a code either and just told me that. My car runs fine and all, I'm just curious.
Do the Mechanical 02 Fix. Go to your local parts store and buy help part # 42002 (18mm Spark Plug Anti-Fouler). Take one of the SPAF and drill a 1/2 inch hole through it. Then take the one you drilled out and screw it into the other one. Be sure to use anti-seeze on the threads. Screw the unit into your exhaust and re-install the O2 sensor.
Disconnect your battery for 10 min and then you should be fine.

Car manufacturers have certain codes that can only be read by specific scanners, for example a normal code would be P0174 which is a lean code. Any scanner can read a P0XXX code but most codes that start with P1XXX are manufacture specific. If it was your cat you would have a code P0420 catalystist efficiency below threshold, which any scanner could read. Then again it could have been user error with the scan tool too.
Maybe it was user error. Under the "Diagnostic trouble codes" portion of the inspection sheet is says no diagnostic codes reported, as in the ecu was not putting one out. I assume it is the cat becaue, to my understanding it takes time for the O2 sensor to reach operating temperature, so if I reset the ecu I can drive for 20-30 mins before the light comes back on. The light comes back on after the rear O2 sensor reaches its operating temp. I have done this a couple of times. Does this make sense?

I just did the hiflow cat, and it takes about 3 days for my CEL to come on. now i dont drive more than 20 miles a day to work so if you drive alot maybe. any of the standard Scan tools can read you 02 sensor issue like listed above. go to Autozone they have the better scan tool and can tell you better. i am looking into the mech fix myself. thanks for listing it again.
