I am having similar problems with my 03. In addition it grinds going into 2nd under hard acceleration and it is starting to grind going into 4th. I have a short shifter and aluminum shifter base bushings and aluminum shift rod bushings. My tranny was grinding going into 2nd before these mods but the others started about 4 weeks after. Could any of these mods be affecting the tranny or does this sound like the TSB you guys are takling about?

Same with my 04 it grindes when I shift into fifth at high RPM's. I took it in and was told that they would replace it when it happens under "normal" driving conditions. Whats normal for the evo?? What a pain in the azz! I guess I should beat on it until it fails. what do you think?

Normal should be anywhere within the redline if you ask me! Mine would only grind above 5.5Krpms and that didn't pose a problem with my dealer.

Daman: The TSBs only mention the reverse and 5th gears but if you have a bad syncro in any gear and are still under warranty have it checked out!

I took my car in yesterday and they could not replicate the problem. It won't happen unless you shift over 5.5K. The dealer told me he didn't "get on it" -I was like then how would you replicate the noise then....retarts. I'm going to make them come with me in the car today. They were saying they might not warranty the snycros b/c i have a ACT clutch.

Get this though....they installed it. Makes sense huh?

This whole reverse idler gear TsB....would that have anything to do with grinding in reverse?

Mitsubishi needs to learn how to make trannys....

Exactly! It was a grind when shifting into reverse followed by a "clunk" for me. I can say that after the repair every thing is cherry!
