5th gear grind??

I have an 05 Evo GSR Model and I have only had the car about 2 months. It has about 4000 Miles. I bought it brand new. It is my second Evo so I didnt kill the clutch....but I did miss a couple of shifts and grind a couple of time going from 1st to 2nd. 2 Weeks ago the weekend before TurboTrix came to flash the Evo's in my city, I installed a TBE, Hallman MBC, and an AEM Intake. The next day I had it flashed. My car picked up A LOT of power, but ever since then when I get on the car hard in 4th gear, and shift over 5000rpm going into 5th I will get a slight grind but it isnt too extreme but I can definately feel it in the palm of my hand. It goes into gear fine and it isnt difficult, but it does make a noise. I need advice. I'm just concerned because I am about to install Cams and it would be a bummer to have to uninstall some stuff just to take my car into the dealership.

I had the same problem. I took my EVO to the dealer and after they reproduced the same grind they took it in for service. I just got it back. They replaced the 5th gear, 5th synchro, reverse idler gear, input shaft bearing, and a long list of other things all under warranty. It now shifts like butter and I couldn't be more happy with the service.

There is a TSB on this also! They told me it came in while they were working on it.

Yep, there is a TSB out on the syncros. Just take it in and they should fix it if they can reproduce it.

That TSB has been out for a long long time

But my car is modified. Will the dealer warranty it? Its weird because if I am not in a higher RPM the car shifts fine and there is no little grind.

Redcloud's Evo is modified as much, if not more, than yours, so they should still fix it, because it's a TSB and has nothing to do with mods. If one dealer says "no" due to mods, go to another.

Also, for all of you, the NEW TSB that Redcloud was talking about is the "reverse idler gear," not just the synchro TSB.

What is the best thing to basically say "my mods have nothing to do with a transmission problem."???

No, that's just instigating. Just go in and say that you are having a 5th gear grind problem and that you understand there is a TSB for this problem. Have them drive it with you in the car to reproduce the problem, then they should fix it. The only problem I see is that they may not be able to go 5k rpm in 4th gear anywhere safely and legally. Does it never grind into 5th at lower speeds? If not, I'm not sure how to prove it...

I have, but you won't. Your 4th gear goes to 120+ while mine ends at 111. Even though I run out of gear, it does me no good to shift to 5th at my current power level, which is putting me in no-man's land currently.

I wasn't talking about the Syncro TSB.

There is a new one out for the REVERSE IDLER GEAR and INPUT SHAFT BEARING!

I have the service statment right in front of me. They just lumped them together and repaired them both.

same problem

hey guys im having the same problem as this guy, i bought my car at 6700 miles, stock, i put in all of the stuff below and after i hit about 9000 the 5th gear would grind if i'm at high speeds or high rpms but not if i'm driving in low rpms. i heard that mitsubishi only voids the warrenty on the part that was modified and not the whole car. my car has 11400 miles right now so i think i need to do this soon. so if someone can give me an answer to dealers in suburban chicago, IL that will fix the problem please message me back. i also had a short shifter that i found out about after i bought the car, the dealer didn't know about it either, what a bunch of dumba$$es man. so please help me out guys. thanks

Yeah I think you are correct, the Synchro TSB was only for the 03 EVOs ...
