I think there's a thread on this somewhere... but 4.75 quarts seems to be the average. Also, I've used Royal Purple before and loved it. I'm currently using Amsoil (also excellent), only because no one carries Royal Purple locally anymore.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but it is better than starting a new one

What is the oil capacity of the EVO? The owner's and shop manual says 4.8 quarts w/o oil filter, 5.1 quarts with the oil filter and 5.4 quarts with the filter and oil cooler.

I did my first oil and filter change at 1,000 (s)miles and filled the engine with 5 quarts. The level was a bit above the top mark.

How do you drain the oil cooler? I checked the shop manual and did not find any information.

Also how do you remove the old crush washer on the drain plug? Is there a crush washer from the factory? The plug did have a ridge that looked like a crush washer but there was no way to remove it. I just used the plug as is and torqued it to the shop manual specs.

I don't think you need to drain the oil cooler. It will just get mixed with the new oil. about 1/2 quart. Next time don't overfill the oil. put in 4.5 quarts, start the engine and shut the engine off. check the oil and add if needed. The crush washer is painted on from the factory. It was tough to remove the first time. use a scribe/small flat tip screwdriver to get it off. Hope this helps.

I was thinking of switching to AMSOIL that way I get better gas milege and don't have to change to oil so often. any thoughts?

New EVO owner here.

So exactly what filter is the OEM one?

Am I reading correctly that we don't always change the oil filter?

Can anyone link to a shot of the crush washer?

Thanks!

The quality of replacement filters varies considerably. Only high quality filters should be used to assure most efficient service. Genuine oil filters require that the filter is capable of withstanding a pressure of 1,800 kPa (261 psi) are high quality filters and are recommended as follows:
Mitsubishi Oil Filter Part Number: MD356000 or equivalent

10w30 is stated in the owners manual and what comes in the evo from the factory

ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT

1.Start the engine and allow it to warm up until the temperature of the coolant reaches 80ーC (176ーF) to 90ーC (194ーF).

Use care as oil could be hot.

2.Remove the engine oil filler cap.

3.Remove the drain plug to drain oil.

4.Install a new drain plug gasket so that it faces in the direction shown in the illustration, and then tighten the drain plug to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 39 ア 5 Nキm (29 ア 3 ft-lb)

Do not use conventional petroleum based motor oil. Using conventional motor oil may cause engine or turbocharger damage.
Do not used "blends" of conventional oil and synthetic oil.

5.Refill the specified quantity of oil.
Specified Engine Oil: Fully synthetic engine oils displaying ILSAC GF-3 certification symbol ("Starburst" symbol) or conforming to the API classification SL or SL/CF
Total quantity (Includes volume inside oil filter and oil cooler): 5.1 dm3 (5.4 quarts)
NOTE: SAE 5W-30 fully synthetic engine oil can be used to improve engine start ability in very cold weather areas where the lowest atmospheric temperature is below -18ーC (0ーF).

6.Install the engine oil filler cap.

7.Check oil level.

Thanks! That was very helpful.

I think I'll use Mobil 5w-30 since I run that in the C5, and our cars all see cold weather driving.

Does anyone use magnetic oil/diff/tranny plugs?

Any insight on this crush washer? Change it every time?

I had a futomoto valve w/ the Fram name brand on it. The washer tended to leak a little oil so I went back to the OE drain plug and just replace the crushed washer everytime. I use a pair of pliers to lock on the crushed washer to get it off.

EDIT: My bad. The Fram Sure Drain valve looks nothing like the Futomoto valve.
