Replace Front PADS only, what do yo guys think?

Well I am in a bit of a money bind, and need new brakes too . So I was talking to my dad ( a mechanic for pac Bell/SBC for over 20 years), and he says that I may not need to oreplaec the rear pads until I replace the front ones the second time.....he says that most cars have a 2 to 1 ratio from Front vs Rear pad replacment........I love my pops, but he is also a Chevey Ford guy, so I dont want to take his word, but It sounds good right now, considering I can only really afford to replace the fronts now.........What do you guys think? BTW, I dont track this car at all.

take a flashlight and look between the calipers and rotors, u can see if the rear pads need to be changed

I would say your Dad is probably right.

If the rears have alot of pad left , just do the fronts.

It's about an 80/20 anyways.

I changed my fronts only frist. Went about 8-10k miles then change my rears. Next time though I getting four new disc and all new pads. I have the Project Mu B-Force on the front and hate them. Hawk HPS on the rear. Don't know what I'll get next. But if you're tight on Money JSC Speed has a great price for the Project Mu, but recommend the Hawks. Good luck!

You could try bendix pads... i paid 27.97 for the fronts(D1001) and 22.96 for the rear(MKD961). and they perform the same as stock.

FYI, most of the EVO's I have seen locally that have had brake pad changes wore almost identical. Mine wore the rears more then the fronts. GO FIGURE. Inspect them then decide.

the rears will wear faster if you use the hand brake when the car is parked. I will highly recommend the Ferodo DS2500. Make sure you put the stock brembo pad shim on the aftermarket pad to prevent squeeling. I've done that and the Ferodo's hardly ever squeel.

????

I don't understand your statement. First, how would they wear when they're not moving?

Second, I've heard (but have not taken them apart to confirm) that the rears have an internal drum brake for the parking brake, and do not use the calipers at all when parked.

Can you explain?

Best thing to do is look and actually see if the rear need replacing, dont just guess.... The front brakes perform most of the braking so yes they wear quicker than the rear.

Kyle.

Dude please dont spread misinformation.

The rear pads on the rotor have ZERO to do with the hand brake. The hand brake is a seperate drum set up inside the rear hub.

This is true. There is a separate drum style parking brake on the inside of the rotor hat.

And brakes don't wear if there is no moving friction being applied to them.

Do check the rear pads first. They do seem to wear more quickly than the fronts. Especially the inside rear, don't know why though. At least on my car and some one else's (don't remember who, he made a post on the boards a month or two ago).

Mine did the EXACT same thing as did a few of the other local guys.

How can the rear wear faster than the fronts? Newton laws go effect here... If driving all the force will be on the front brakes. Thats why the rotor and pads are larger to include the 4 pistons on the front vs the 2 pistons on the rears.

Weird!!! The handbrake is attached to the disc brake inside the rear rotors. How does the hand brake wear the pads??? Also how does it cause wear while parked???

You can take Newtons law and divide it by E=MC squared and get the square root of whatever you want. I am telling you the rear pads on many EVO's wear faster then the fronts. Slice it dice it smother it cover it do what ya like, facts are it happens and it has happend to more then 1 or 2 people. Matter of fact my service tech told me most EVO's he see's are like this. Ask Newton to go figure it out and get back with us when he does please.

on my car the rears lasted much longer than the fronts. third set on front, second set in back and they look like new.

you should be able to see the pad edge next to the rotor. an eight of an inch is cutting it close.

btw, the fronts look to have more pad left than they really do when looked at mounted. they wear on the top side more than the bottom.
