Track Tonight!

Well it was my first time taking the evo to the track. Only mod is 3 inch turbo back exhaust. Ran a 13.8 my first run, then had 2 really crappy 14.1 and 14.3 runs. I wasnt launching it right, and then i ran a 13.66 @ 102.74 60' was crap 2.145
oh well i was looking to run a 13.6 or better so i hit it on my last run of the evening. Does anyone here have any issues shifting into 2nd gear at Wot from first. I grind just about everytime and there is only 4400 miles on my car. I dont beat on the car either. I just ran it for the first time because i wanted to see what it would do. anyways Take care.

I used to grind 2nd if you don't press and let go of the clutch in time... but it got better with more practice....

Yeah get the 60 foot launch down, and the times will go down. I always either bog or burn the clutch. My auto gsx has a faster 1/4 time at 13.4 @ 104 @ 18psi = /

That's actually not so bad, I mean 13.6@102MPH with a 2.1 60FT is good. The power is there, you just need to work on your launches. How are you launching the car anyways? With a 1.6 or 1.7 60FT you'd be very low 13s, maybe even high 12s.

I get the same grind at ~4k miles. It only seems to happen on 7k+ shifts so when I was at the track I started shifting right at 6.8k-7k. That stopped the grinding, unfortuntely, it puts you slightly off boost in 2nd. I think I will try some new fluid in the tranny and see if that helps.

Who can explain exactly how the "proper" launch is done?

there are numerous threads on launching. About the 2nd gear grind. I have heard a couple of things about this. Change the underhood bushings, and shifter bushings, and clutch line to stainless unit, also removing the clutch restrictor is supposed to help with the accuracy of the shifts...hope this helps

i started by launching really low at like 3500 - 4000. but then i started dumping it at 5k. I would very lightly slip the clutch and it was starting to get good. But i need to practice more. I need to get the 60' time down. I dont like the 2nd gear thing. Its really annoying. These are brand new cars they shouldnt be grinding 2nd. Ive always noticed that 2nd is more notchy than any of the other gears even during normal driving. Well thanks for the replies

Yea Ive been practicing the 3500-4000 launches also, they seem to be the safest as far as not burning the clutch ect. I dont usually get second gear grind when doing those, its when im making a turn onto a road and gunning it up to 7k. Dunno, thanks for the bushing/shifter info.

You're most likely to burn the clutch with a low rpm launch, because it requires a ton of slipping to get started. Nothing below 5k rpm is useful, and frankly, 5k is too low...

DsmAwdTurbo, your 05 is capable of 13.0 at 105 in stock form with a real launch. With a TBE, you can hit 108mph with proper driving, so keep practicing until you see numbers close to that. Your 102mph on such horrible 60's shows that your car is making power, and that's the most important thing, so don't worry about the low ETs.

Try some BG Synchro Shift trans fluid for high RPM shifting, it will save alot of wear on your synchros. The stock trans fluid is too thick for performance driving.

JUst curious but what rpm are you launching? Above 5K? That could be the reason for my sucky 60ft times. The most I've done is slipping at 5K.

i launch below 5k and get 1.8 / 1.9 60 foot times

it can be done, just needs practice
