EVO w/out ACD/AYC - will it be the same animal as before
EVO w/out ACD/AYC - will it be the same animal as before
The EVO has owned the STi for some time. Will this be the same now that the EVO hasn't got ACD/AYC that led arguably to its superior handling.
OR will the STi have the EVO for lunch.
OR will the STi have the EVO for lunch.
I want to see Mitsu and Sube duke it out!
Of course, not having the AYC and ACD will limit the EVO's handling capabilities. In addition, the lack of limited slip in the front will also hurt.
Don't let any fool convince you that a combination of open/viscous diffs is superior to the AYC,ACD,Front LSD combo just because some racing versions of the EVO and STI come with cheap diffs. The reason certain racing versions come with cheap hardware is because the people buying those cars will upgrade the hardware depending on what type of racing they will participate in and what the rules specify, etc. The reason for eliminating the good diffs for the US version has to do with money and mitsu's perception of their target market. Pure and simple.
Given that the USDM EVOs suspension is excellent, the EVO will probably still handle really well compared to ordinary sports cars, but i doubt it will be able to match the JDM EVO and the USDM/JDM STIs. The main area where the US EVO's handling will suffer from it's cheap differential hardware is during corner exits. It simply will not be able to put down power as effectively as a car with LSDs in all three distribution points.
On the power side, The JDM EVO makes about 30-40 horsepower more than the US version. That too will hurt to some degree. And yes, you can always modify the car but then you run the risk of jeopardizing the car's warranty, drivability and resale value.
I have driven an EVO VI and I love it
It is one of the best cars I have ever driven.
When Sube gave us the diluted WRX the arena was different. They were the first ones in the market, and therefore the risks were higher. With the WRX's success, Mitsu should have known better. I feel that Mitsubishi is reacting rather than being proactive in the US market.
I really want Mitsu to bring a proper EVO to the US. I want to see an all out war between Subaru and Mitsubishi. Remember, the more competitive the arena, the better it is for the consumer.

The car will not corner as well as an Evo with AYC/ACD but according to all the euro magazines, the U.S. Evo is more fun to drive. Plenty of nice controlled drifting like previous Evos. The Evo 8 with ACD/AYC is so good at turning that it takes insane acts to get it to drift according to CAR. I'd rather have a car that's more fun to drive than one that handles a bit better at a limit i'll never reach. Then again, i'm not racing the car.
Everything about your post assumes that the Evo will be outhandled by the Sti, and perhaps even OWNED by it. For one thing, the former car is just now getting into the hands of eager customers. The other is a collection of stats and conjecture. Others may feel that it was very important to introduce this car in the sub 30K category and make it a rock solid car to own without horrible maintenance issues. Until we see a head2head USDM test of an Evo8 versus an Sti, we won't be able to assume that Mitsu has made a mistake by not bringing "a real Evo" as you put it.

LOLI have said so many times now that AYC sucks that I cant really be bothered anymore replying to this type of thread.
A car with mechanical diffs will give the driver total control. This isnt the case with AYC. AYC induces understeer and it's impossible to predict the oversteer if you manage to get it to oversteer. Therefore, the AYC car cannot be driven as fast.
I paid several thousand US dollars to get the AYC removed properly. That should be a good indication that it is indeed no good. If that doesnt convince you, how about this: NO rally Evo uses AYC, be it in GrN, GrA or WRC.
ACD is good in theory but needs a 1,000 USD Rallairt K2 ECU to work properly. With stock ACD, you can only change the setup from "slight understeer" (TARMAC) to "more understeer" (GRAVEL) to "FWD" (SNOW).
No AYC and no ACD means Mitsubishi:
- saved money
- gave you guys a car that is more reliable
- gave you a "proper" Evo, a "man's car", a pure fun machine that needs a skilled driver with time to learn how to drive it really fast
- gave you a car that's got more tuning potential

That's probably the only thing I'd do to the tranny, albeit not immediately.
I remember Claudius describing the limitations of ACD/AYC in other threads. He's already modded the poop outta his car already, so I'd tend to believe what he says.

The diffs on the WRC car are electronically adjustable, but they are not an AYC system! LOL The drivers would tell them to go to hell if they put AYC on the WRC, I guarantee that!
Or maybe they did and that's why they werent competitive?

Well said.
