BOV for the evoVIII
I assume this trick will work on the VIII

This adds some noise ( not quite rice ) but a nice little power increase

If your question is asking what a BOV's function is then here is a pretty good explanation.
"When the throttle of a turbo engine on boost is released the throttle plate shuts & compressed air is forced back into the turbo, slowing it between gear changes & creating turbo lag. This excess pressure can exceed five times normal boost pressure & puts the system components under strain.
The blow-off valve relieves excess compressed air in the intake system & intercooler when the throttle is released. It prevents mechanical damage to the intercooler & turbo pipework, prolongs turbocharger life & prevents excessive turbo lag that would be caused by the compressor shaft stalling."
Stock DSM BOV's are located on the upper inter-cooler pipe (outlet of intercooler to inlet of throttle body) and vent to the turbine inlet side, however, aftermarket BOV's can dump to the atmosphere and make ricer sounds that are covetted by F&Fers.
If you knew all this, then I apologize for not understanding your question.

My head is spinning from reading all this???
I think i will just let the fine people at
use what they already have on this car.
I think they know what they are doing.

Hi,
The most important statement was by zlancer, specifically, searching out technical information on the gizmo's in your new Lancer before modding them. There are a number of excellent knowledge bases including clubdsm. I am at work, but will post the link to the "1000 FAQ's" if you are interested.
To add additional confusion, a few racers do vent to atmosphere, however, they are not using the MAS as input to the ECU. I use a VPC for input, although my goal was to eliminate fuel cut not make noise. I would never start my 4G63 without a functional BOV nor add a pssssssssssssssssst thingy. But a lot of folks like them which is ok. Besides, it is hard to hear them when the sound is behind you......!
Have Fun!

Much of the discussions going on here remind me of those early DSM days when there was a lot of experimenting. I would like to think that a lot of the tricks on the DSM engines would apply to the EVO engine (remove insert in wastegate actuator tube anyone?). www.clubdsm.org is still up if anyone cares to peruse info regarding the 4G63 DSM engines......
Oh man, when it's your first turbo car you are very persuasive to do dumb things to your car... Be careful who you take advice from....
ONCE YOU'VE HAD A TURBO AND ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE, NOTHING ELSE COMPARES!!!

The EVO is boosting 19 psi till 4k rpms or so from factory so minimum the BOV has to hold that much pressure till red line.
I believe that the car can be boosted to 20 PSI with out changing any parts other than adding a Boost Controller. Hello 12sec
People replace bov and some times they don't even need them.
Like some other people have stated the bov only function is to release the pressure of the I/C pipes when the Throttle plate is closed. BOV makes no power, the only way you can see and increase in power is if the BOV used is leaking pressure and is swap for one that can hold that pressure.
One more thing. Venting the BOV to the atmosphere it might be a bad idea. Simply because the air that the BOV is releasing is accounted for by the Air Flow meter and that creates a rich situation under shift that might result on the car back firing or even staling. Is proven that back fires on the 4G63 leads to early piston ring failure... so be careful.

upgrading your by-pass valve was not intended to give power. what it does is it gets the air out of the I/C pipes faster then a stock by-pass valve, with more control and also gives no chance of leaking. this will decrease turbo lag and help increase 1/4 mile times and straightaway speeds at the track. it helps the car stay in the powerband with faster boost.
So which one would you pick? HKS or Greddy?
hey zlancer, I would love to see some pics of yer car dude. The list looks sick. That's one mean machine.
How much did you pay for the GT28, what psi?

HKS and Greddy both make excellent BOV's....it jus depends on which sound you like better.
My registry has a bunch of pics...i don't really have much more then that. the T-28 was included with my RPW kit at $2,700 when i got it over a year ago. wastegate set at 7-8 psi.

I had a Greddy Type S on my GSX which I sold because I am not planning on doing any modifications to the EVO in the next 3 years. But for the price the Greddy I think is the best. The Greddy can be purchase for $180 on the other hand the HK$ I think is up in the $250 range.
Whatever you guys want to do don't forget that I/C pipe in which the BOV is mounted is probably going to have to be replace by and aftermarket one, simply because the mounting flange is probably not going to be the same.
