BOV for the evoVIII
What exactly is this, I know it is for the turbo. What comes stock on the evo? And what will the BOV do different than the stock one. And will it hurt the engine in anyway, and will it hurt the warrenty? All I know is that it is a blow off valve, that makes a psssssst sound, I have never heard one before, it might be knid of cool to have.
Thanks
Thanks
Not sure. I think it comes stock with a crapy release valve. HKS and Greddy make some sweet *** BOV's. Not sure if they ahve any for the Evo VIII, but it shouldn't be different than other turbo Mitsus.
Hi,
If your question is asking what a BOV's function is then here is a pretty good explanation.
"When the throttle of a turbo engine on boost is released the throttle plate shuts & compressed air is forced back into the turbo, slowing it between gear changes & creating turbo lag. This excess pressure can exceed five times normal boost pressure & puts the system components under strain.
The blow-off valve relieves excess compressed air in the intake system & intercooler when the throttle is released. It prevents mechanical damage to the intercooler & turbo pipework, prolongs turbocharger life & prevents excessive turbo lag that would be caused by the compressor shaft stalling."
Stock DSM BOV's are located on the upper inter-cooler pipe (outlet of intercooler to inlet of throttle body) and vent to the turbine inlet side, however, aftermarket BOV's can dump to the atmosphere and make ricer sounds that are covetted by F&Fers.
If you knew all this, then I apologize for not understanding your question.

I have to comment on the BOV. I had a HKS on my 1997 GST. It allowed me to have less turbo lag, and Im not a ricer freak, but id definitely made a mean sound. You can pull up to a stoplight, look at the driver next to you, rev the engine, and the BOV literally makes it sound like your car is huffing like some crazed animal ready to kill!!!!
The funny part is cruising down the road, find some nice hotties and then let her blow. You rev that engine to about 6000 rpm and let off, it can literally scare the crap out of you. Most ricers wont even try to race you with this on the car. I have seen some cheap civics with "make believe" BOV's. Some wierd electrical set up that makes the sound of a BOV when you rev the car. Talk about cheesy

That fake BOV lancealott is talking about is straight up stupid. There is a kid that lives here that has one and all I do is laught every time I see him because he pulls up next to me and rev his engine and he has it programmed to go off at about 5000 RPM' s

Just kidding! Some of them are actually quite loud plus annoying! LOL. Anyway I wasn't intending to make fun of folks who use them. Speaking of fake stuff, you can also purchase a gizmo that gets stuffed in the exhaust can and makes turbo sounds.
Have fun and be safe!

Unless you intend to modify the turbo a BOV is not necessary (performance wise). If you like the pppsshhhh then why not.
You also asked about the warranty, I know a lot of people who installed one on their WRXs and had the warranty voided because of that. You can always replace the stock valve when you get your car serviced...

Adding and removing the BOV can be done in a matter of 10 minutes or less with the right tools. The BOV is not necessary, but it does help a stock turbo system (based on my old car). It got rid of a little turbo lag. Its definitely worth it for me. I would go with HKS over Greddy on the BOV. Make sure if you buy one of these, you check to see how much PSI they can handle. Your BOV may not be able to handle all the power, thus worthless.
As for my IS300, I gotta change my vehicle profile. I just sold it last week. I only owned it for about 2 months. Great car, plush ride, weak power. Inline 6 with 215 HP. I didnt do any upgrades to it. I was going to, but then looked at cost and compared vs the evo. Obviously no comparison. Thus sold my clunky is300, and getting my evo this month.

I had a BOV on my WRX and apart from the sound it did nothing for me. If you ask the guys over at www.nasioc.com (Subaru site) they'll tell you how useless a BOV is on a stock car, some have even experienced power loss...
Hmm, interesting. I guess it depends on what type of car you have. I say that because everyone knows the stock BOV on the 2g Eclipse is about worthless. Im talking, this thing blows. Anything other than the factory has to be better than what they put on that model.
On the flip side, if you have a good stock part, why change it. Honda is infamous for having some factory parts that cant be beat. At least that is per my friend that has a 2001 Civic SI with a Vortec Supercharger. That car rips!!!
