Honest question for Dayton_EVO.

If you only had one car to choose from, would it be the Evo or STI ?

Believe me I know because I own both cars and have tested them exclusivly in all aspects of grip and handling. My Bridgstones have by far out lasted my Advans. Do a search of the forums or internet and you will see the Advan is by far the best non- R compound tire you can buy without stepping up to an R compound. This comparison on tires has been discussed to death on this forum for a very long time. Besides, the RE070 Bridgestone tire has a 140 tread wear rating not 60. Where did you get that bit of misinformation from? A 60 tread wear rating is on a straight R compound track tire, a soft compound track tire at that. Most R compound "medium to hard" have around 80 or 90 even 120 tread wear rating.
I love my Bridgestones even though they don't grip as well as the Advans and by no means are they a crappy tire. Put Advans on an 05 Sti with the DCCD and watch that bad boy take corners like nothing you've seen. That's why I wish our Evo's were not watered down and still had the Super AYC and other components that come on JDM spec Evo's.
My bad...you are correct the rating is 140 and not 60 as I suggested. My memory is not like it use to be. I might have been reading up on another tire.

Now, I'm sure it's fine, but I told him we get Mobil 1 for our cars, free maintenance or not, so why would you want them to put in dino oil? Both cars are pretty much the same, awd, turbo'd, etc. but you let them put in regular oil? I was kinda shocked. I told him that's probably why the Evo's are a bit faster than the STi's.
Um, they put regular dino oil in there for his first oil change because the STi comes with regular dino from the factory.

The best thing about the RE070 is the super stiff sidewall and the the fantastic dry grip. Straightline acceleration in the wet is good but hard cornering on them can get a bit hairy in the wet. I've been curious about changing my tires to a Toyo T1-R or possibly these Advans

Any of you guys try the T1-Rs? I can't find the 046s on Yokohamas website...are they specifically made for the Evo (like the RE070s for the STi)?

Even if you could clutch, breaks, and tires are all wear items; not under warranty and damn expensive, esp. if you put back in OEM parts( if you don't you get voided)
warranty don't mean siht!

That's fine. but now that he's modded, i told him to just put Mobil 1 and stick with that. But for my other friend with his stock 05 STi (yes I got 2 good friends with Sti's), I made sure to tell the dealer to put in Mobil 1 for his first free one.

They should put a line on the STi/EVO warranty that says something along the lines

"Why are you reading this you know you are going to void it"

I wore out my ADVANS in approximately 10,000 miles. One of them actually popped due to wear. Guess what, I don't autocross my car nor have I ever been to the track. This is from daily driving. Those tires are amazing but they don't last for squat. I have some Khumo ASX's on the car now and they are nothing compared to the ADVANS. The treadwear is 400+ though.

Stock for stock it is pretty damn close from everything I've read (at least 05 vs 05). C&D had an article about the MR vs the 05 STi and it was exceptionally close, especially when they used the same tires.

Stock for stock you shouldn't see a large gap in handling. I know a lot of you guys would like to believe that the STi sucks, but given equal drivers, it would be difficult to lose one on a road course...stock vs stock of course.

Well, if you drove one you would know this isn't the case. There was very little understeer from my STi on the track (granted I did adjust my pressure 40f/36r). The only corners I noticed understeer were approaching 90 deg and at the end of a decent straight. I typically would carry a little too much speed into these corners and it definitely pushed a bit (much like any car really.) The exit speeds and handling are fantastic though, as the car just bites on throttle and can be very easily controlled with throttle modulation.

I would imagine that a lot of the Evos handling advantages are in the tires (as posted above) and the quicker steering rack. Having slightly wider tires (235s) and better rubber will make a difference.

Either way, the STi doesn't have, "understeer, understeer, understeer", that is unless you can't drive...

Top Gear, different car (2L, different tires, I think heavier too -depending on which model they reviewed, etc.)

Best Motoring, not the best place for reviews (they sometimes have contradicting reviews if you pay attention.) Plus it is a slightly different car again (and different tires.)

MotorTrend ... haven't read the review where they say the 05 continually understeers.

I guess it all depends on the track too. The RE070s tend to get greasy after 8-10 laps of a short track, which definitely contributes to understeer. Other than that though, no understeer issues here. But hey, I only own and track the car so what do I know.
