What is the $700 'Pit-Pass'?

I keep hearing different things about the $700 'Pit-Pass'. Could someone once and for all lay down the facts. The things I have heard are as follows, please state True False to each and append any other info. Thanks.

1. Pit-Pass is required to buy the car
2. Pit-Pass is just an option (ie. not required)
3. Not getting Pit-Pass voids warranty
4. Not getting Pit-Pass shortens warranty
5. Not getting Pit-Pass has no effect on warranty
6. Pit-Pass consists just of pre-paid oil changs at the dealer

If the Pit-Pass is required for warranty, why is it not included in the price of the car? I think I'd want a bit more of a discount than $700 if I was going to void the the warranty on a new car.

Thanks.

From searching here it appears to be a way for the dealer to make more off the sale of the car. The "inspection" covered by the pass can be done by you in about 10 minutes by opening your hood and peering under the car. Its another way to pad the sales price.

Do even a rudimentary search. All of these questions have been answered.

A dealership cannot force you to purchase an additional item in order to retain the factory warranty. It's not legal. The actual warranty laws were posted up here at some point in the past.

If this pit pass was required to maintain the factory warranty, it would be included in the price of the car.

It's a new car folks. 27 point inspection isn't necessary. Just a visual would be fine for now.

yeah i see these service options, kinda go with the extended warranty. In the case of this car many of us will be modifying the vehicle, voiding the warranty any way... If you aren't used to doing your own oil changes, it might be a decent idea, but for me, i dismiss it as easiely as the question of any factory options for the vehicle

Is it really true that you void the entire car's warrnaty if you modify it?

I thought the law states that the dealer must first prove that your modified part made it break in the first place. Then, only the affected part of the vehicle is affected, but the rest of the warranty is intact.

For example, if you bump up the boost with a chip, and then you blow the block, the block and all related damage to it will not be covered. However, the suspension, interior and all other parts of the vehicle are still covered.

No???

By law and in theory, no, a mod doesn't void the entire warranty. The dealer must prove it caused the failure.

In reality, the dealer holds most of the cards and will deny your warranty coverage, forcing you to resort to legal means of applying pressure.

That's my estimation of what would occur.

Go talk to the service department at your local dealership and see their policy. Most understand that if you put on an exhaust and the ac dies they will fix it.
