trade in for me

My friend runs a dealer and I only buy from him.

I get good money for my cars and pay less for cars. The tax break and lack of tire kickers is very much worth it. I let them worry about the test beating

I have not, and probably won't trade the Evo in....but, in Massachusetts, if you sell someone a car, you are responsible for any problems with it for 30-90 days. even if they abuse it and break something down the road you are responsible to fix it. but if you trade it in to a dealer you are free and clear. i've had friends trade in cars with CELs, ABS/SRS lights, broken transmissions, etc without any issues.

i opted to trade in an older vehicle for my Exploder instead of selling it to a friend for this very reason.

anyway, why does it concern you so much? it's someone else's money and someone else's problem

1. Very crazy incentives for brand new models
2. Only pay sales tax on the price diffence (if any) of new vehicle less trade-in value (near $2K tax for > $30K new)
3. Don't want to deal with "joy-riders"

I know selling a car is a hassle, but are you seriously willing to cave in and just trade the car in and lose out on some serious dough just because selling the car is a hassle? Plus, when you trade in your car, not only are you d*cking yourself, but youre also d*cking over other guys who are looking to buy an evo, because now they have to buy one from the dealership which will charge them more money, whereas if you bought the car from a private seller, you get the car for less, and the seller gets more because he sold the car rather than trading it in, so no one wins with trade ins other than the dealership. I mean, am i just looking at this all wrong? How many agree with me here? (PS. i dont mean to get anybody here all p*ssed off bc they traded in their car, im just saying why did you do it when at least to me it makes no sense?)
its easier to do a trade in. less work on the sellers part

1. Don't get all that much more selling privately anymore. With the internet and price guides so readily available, buyers know trade-in value and usually don't want to offer you much more than that. For instance, a car sells for 24k on a dealer lot, and they will give you 20k for trade in... you're lucky to get 22k selling it privately.

2. Tax break. Because I traded in 20k toward my 30k EVO purchase, I didn't have to pay CT sales tax on that 20k. That saved me $1200.

3. Hassle/time/risks of selling privately. It can take months to sell privately if you want to get top dollar. Plus eBay costs almost $100 if you sell your car, and Autotrader is $50+. Then you have strangers calling you, coming to your house, meeting your family, etc. Not fun. Or you could have an experience like I did on eBay where the winning bidder flakes out and makes up some lie to not purchase your car.

4. Dealers like trade-ins. If you're good, you can use your trade-in as negotiation to get a lower purchase price on your new car.

Overall, for me it wasn't worth the effort and time anymore to sell privately, especially when I realized in the end it was only saving me $700 or so. That added $11/month to my car payment, I can live with that.
I agree completely. I tried to sell a car once instead of trading it in. The dealer offered me 17K for it and I sold it for 17.5K after six months of advertising and two car payments. Sometimes it is not worth it.

Many good points. I would think one of the main reasons is the hassle of selling yourself. And the time it takes to do it. I know I'm not an Evo owner...well yet...but I'm trying to sell my 03 ES....I may just end up trading it in for a used Evo.

Im not trading mine in Im keeping that ****. When its paid off Ill buy another car and rebuild what needs to be. In years to come the VIII and IX will be sought after. Ill still have one thats a monster. I never use warrantys anyway cause you dont know what the hell a dealers doing to your car. Ill fix what happens to it myself. If it needs a tranny or TC down the road Ill just call Ripp there pricing is not bad at all. Even putting a new engine in an EVO wont cost rediculous money.

Cuz, I wanted to buy my EVO MR right away and not wait till my R32 was sold. Also I save on taxes and did not have to deal with people test driving my R32.
