TARGETS OF DEVELOPMENT

LANCER EVOLUTION pursues further evolution.
The engine and the transaxle are improved to power
and torque-up, and an active center differential sys-
tem (ACD) is adopted to improve the handling perfor-
mance. As these improvements, the established
status will be ensure as high performance compact
sedan. LANCER EVOLUTION <MR edition> that
offers better driving performance and equipment is
newly added as high grade model for a limited-time
besides the previous LANCER EVOLUTION <GSR/
RS>.

A larger diameter nozzle is used for the turbo
charger to torque-up at middle and high speed
range.
•
LANCER EVOLUTION <MR edition> is premium
grade that offers better driving performance and
equipment. It has introduced new developed
6-speed manual transaxle (6M/T), active center
differential system (ACD), Bilstein shock
absorber* and BBS forged aluminum wheel.
•
An active center differential system (ACD) has
been adopted to LANCER EVOLUTION <RS/
GSR> as standard equipment. Bilstein shock
absorber* and BBS forged aluminum wheel have
been adopted as optional equipment.
•
On LANCER EVOLUTION <RS>, aluminum roof
etc. have been adopted as standard equipment
to reduce the weight. These adoptions advance
the performance as racing base-car.
NOTE: *: Mitsubishi motors collaborated with Bilstein
on the exclusive shock absorber for LANCER EVO-
LUTION.

Aluminum side door beams are also adopted as well
as hood and fender to improve lightweightness of the

4G63-DOHC-Charge Air Cooler Turbo engine
installed on Lancer Evolution 2005 model is basically
the same engine installed on Lancer Evolution 2004
model, but the turbocharger is changed to improve
the performance.

TURBO CHARGER
The turbocharger is designed to improve the mid-
dle-high range torque by using the big-nozzle turbo
charger, resulting in the middle-range speed torque
and response by the turbocharger control. The low
speed torque is improved by changing the positions
of the turbine housing and the waste gate hole,
resulting in the smoother exhaust. This comes to the
form of the waste gate valve to be changed to the
round valve from the oval valve.
MANUAL TRANSAXLE

TRANSAXLE, TRANSFER <W5M5>

A field-proven W5M5 type transaxle (5-speed manual transaxle) has been adopted to the LANCER EVO-
LUTION <RS/GSR>.
•
An active center differential system (ACD) and a helical gear type limited slip differential have been
adopted to the transfer. Due to this adoption, a cornering traction is ensured and an ideal driving line is
achieved.

2. ACTIVE CENTER DIFFERENTIAL (ACD)
On the center differential control mechanism, a new
developed active center differential (ACD) has been
adopted. ACD electronically controls the center dif-
ferential to improve the driving performance.
.
The more rapid the deceleration is, the more secure the engagement
of the center differential becomes so that its operating condition
should be close to the direct coupling AWD, improving stability during
deceleration.
2. First half of cornering (around
corner entry)
The engagement of the center differential becomes loose according
to the steering angle and operating speed of the steering wheel so
that the center differential should be almost free from engagement,
improving cornering performance.
3. Last half of cornering (around
corner exit)
The engagement of the center differential becomes more secure
according to the depressing amount of the accelerator pedal so that
the operating condition of the center differential should be close to the
direct coupling AWD, improving acceleration performance.

3. ACD SYSTEM
In ACD system, the hydraulic pressure multiplate
clutch is used for the limited slip differential of center
differential integrated into the transfer. Additionally,
the ACD system uses the various types of sensors,
AWD-ECU, and hydraulic unit to control the differen-
tial operation electronically.

TRANSAXLE, TRANSFER <W6MAA>
•
On LANCER EVOLUTION <MR edition>, a new developed W6MAA type transaxle (6-speed manual
transaxle) has been adopted. The W6MAA type transaxle combines an acceleration performance
achieved by an adoption of cross gear ratio and a high-speed performance acquired by 6th gear, thus cor-
responding to a wide variety of driving conditions.

On the transfer, an active center differential system (ACD) and a helical gear type limited slip differential
as for W5M5 type transaxle have been adopted as standard equipment.

1. SHIFT KNOB
Spherical shift knob has been employed.
The shape of the shift knob has been designed with
top priority given to the operationability during sporty
driving, and its size is designed with consideration to
a better fit with a racing glove. Using genuine leather
and soft material, damage to the hand during endur-
ance race will be reduced.

2. SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY <W6MAA>
For LANCER EVOLUTION <MR edition> shift lever
assembly, the conventional reverse position of the
5M/T shift lever assembly has been replaced with the
6th gear position and the reverse position has been
equipped on the right side of the 6th gear position.
For this reason, the preventive mechanism for acci-
dentally shifting into reverse gear during shifting
operation from the 5th gear to the 6th gear has been
employed.
Using the stroke stopper equipped with the reverse
shift prevention mechanism, the shifting stroke of the
shift lever assembly ensures the same stroke opera-
tion of the 5 M/T shift lever assembly.

The Bilstein front and rear shock absorbers have
been adopted to improve the road holding perfor-
mance. <MR edition: standard equipment, RS/GSR:
optional equipment>
NOTE: * The Bilstein shock absorber is one of the
