Over Filling Engine Oil Question

I did my oil change and I put the whole 5 quart bottle, the dipstick is over the highest line. I drove the car normally for about 1 week then and it was all fine, then last nite I open it up. My check engine light came on! so knowing I over fill the car I drain some oil out then drove around and the light came off. my question is

Did I hurt the engine in anyway?
What should I check for to see if anything is wrong with the car?

please I need your advice, thank you in Advance

You'll be fine. You only overfilled it by .2 or .3 Qts or so, you'll burn that off in a month. If you underfilled it you might have to worry.

Er, I'm confused. You're worried about the light, but you weren't worried about driving it for a week after you knew it was overfilled? In any event I doubt you did any real damage, but if you're really concerned about the CEL get the code pulled. Even if you did hurt something it's too late to do anything about it other than fix whatever breaks. Without knowing what the CEL was for, there's really no way to know if it is related -- it may have nothing to do with the oil level.

The light came off after taking some oil out and driving it for like 10 mins. So i am pretty sure that the CEL was for the oil being over filled, I drove It like that cause i think it going to be fine, Its no like I put 1 quart extra.

I too put 5 quarts in, and it was over the line. I haven't gotten a CEL from it though. I was a little shocked when I checked it, and it was over, as the manual states that the filter and pan capacity should equal more than 5 quarts. Next time I will put a little less in.

Overfilling is very bad for the engine. However, .2-.5qts over isnt THAT bad... a whole quart is bad!!!
