I agree totally. Have you guys seen the factory setup? It's pretty weak. They want $464.25 for it, to be exact. And it's weak.

Blah...don't think I'll go for that. It seems like viewing it will be rather hard since it is so low down.

Truthfully, for as much as I'd like to see the gages, a boost gage, EGT, Volts or whatever else they are aren't what you would be watching in a race.. In a race I'd be watching engine temp, and oil pressure, maybe RPM, but I'd be listening to the engine for shift points, or using a shift light. So to make a long story short, the gages would be something I'd use for tuning, but not something I'd be watching other than eye-candy.. so its not really important where their located..

EGT is more than eye candy as parameter to monitor on a turbocharged engine. It is a critical parameter that should be monitored when at boost and pushing hard. I glance at boost to ensure it is holding.

I have a dual pod pillar mount (autometer) and I like the position and visiblity of the guages. The dual pod does not cover the entire pillar, so perfectionist might want to consider a triple pod.

I had a dash-mounted Defi pod and 60mm gauges in my stage 3 WRX. Boost, EGT, and oil temp are a nice combo to keep you on top of the radical temps of a tuned turbo engine.

Certainly the EGT requires a little work to get installed, but if you are running a bigger turbo or more boost can keep you from blowing up your engine. I love the motor-driven electronic gauges like the Defi's, and new Blitz gauges. They allow you to set alarm thresholds, view peak hold readings and will provide a record function allowing you to playback the events of a 1/4 mile run for example.

Gotta love the way they ratchet through their needle sweep in sequence as they go through their self-test ...thats functional eye candy that can save money in repairs.

For a stock vehicle, a boost gauge is all you really need.

Just my .02

I already use an EGT gage and a Boost gage in my supercharged malibu, however I find that I NEVER look at those gages when I'm racing.. how much boost, and what your mixture is just isn't important, its a tuning tool, so location should be convenient, but doesn't need to be in your line of site. There are exceptions, for instance if your running NOS in addition to Boost, or you have the ability to change your boost level during a race.. Then you might want to monitor those gages. I have bright 'lights' that shine for several things during a race (Drag racing mind you) a Shift light, Oil light, and temp light.. I also have gages that I can glance at, but I don't look at them frequently unless i'm just driving around town... Over and above that, its just personal preference.. I definitely like to be a little low profile, which means pillar mounts or mounting on top of the dash (where it can be seen by people pulling up next to you) are certainly eye candy... Racing of any sort is very intense, and requires your focus on doing something other than looking at the dash.. Even nascar drivers have minimal gages, most are accompanied by idiot lights, and most of the gages are rotated so the needles point north if everything is normal.. so they can catch a problem at a glance. And Formula (Indy) cars barely have any instrumentation.. usually indicators and some digital readouts..

all my gages are installed in the stock gage pod where the original cluster was mounted.. the only visible gage from the outside of the car if someone pulls up next to me is a small portion of the tach.. but the tach, shiftlight, and oil light are all in my line of sight when I'm racing.. the rest aren't... check out the pic..

let me add that I'm not defending any particular opinion.. Just personal experience.. I've seen the EVO Addon gages and their definitely not in a good location if you want to monitor them, and they do look cheap.. but at $400 something dollars.. they better be bolt-in plug-and-play.. Cuz their just inexpensive electric gages otherwise..
