My First Trip over 5000 rpms
Well, since the manual says to wait 600 miles, and the standard is 1000 miles, and I am at 900 miles, I decided it was probably safe to venture over the 5000rpm mark for the first time tonight. I was a bit of a sissy and only went to around 6000+/- rpms, but it was not quite as exciting as I expected.
To me, it feels like the motor is powering the car from 1000 to 3000, then it's all turbo with exponential increases in speed from 3000 to 5000, but then it seems like the engine takes over again as the boost starts to cut back. It's still accelerating quickly, it just doesn't have that turbo pull to it.
Guess I need an MBC/Boost Gauge to fix that right up!

1) Nowhere is the standard 1000 miles for break-in with the Evo. 600 is the max you need to go before ripping it to the rev limiter in every gear.
2) 6000 rpms is not high enough. You need to go to 7500 in 2nd and 3rd, then you will feel the true power. The Evo doesn't hit peak HP until 6600-6800rpm, and believe me, you'll feel it continue to pull even to 7500.
3) The factory tune starts to go rich at 5200, then very rich at 6000. On the dyno, there is a flat spot in that 6000rpm range that you can actually FEEL on butt dyno, but then it kicks in even harder as you approach 7000 rpm. If you go hold 2nd or 3rd all the way to the rev limiter, you will feel the initial surge at peak torque (3800-5000), then what feels like a plateau in power (5000-6000), and then another hard pull as you reach peak hp (6000-6800). After that, the boost tapers off more, and the turbo runs out of breath, but you don't want to shift until 7000-7200 if you plan on continuing to go hard in the next gear without a lapse in power.

Don't worry, a flash is on the "to do" list also.
I'll have to try running it a little higher. It just sounds so wierd to me.
On my Civic Si and Contour SVT, they both had aftermarket intake and exhaust, so the faster I went, I heard a nice balanced sound from the front and back of the car. This is all engine noise so far so it sounds strange to me, but I'll get used to it.
I need me some exhaust!

I let my car break in for 1000 miles then got on it here and there. I didn't really fell that it fully broken in till about 2500 miles and it almost seemed like it got faster. Plus you might be thinking its going to pull you back into the sit when the turbo spools like a 02 s4 for example but I have found that it is more of a contunious pull from low rpms? also i would get a boost gauge

good luck
