HELP! My 05 Evo has knock!
Maybe i didn't state before, but i think i did? I don't have the title in my name yet, so i can't use the warranty. And with the person i bought it from being in VA and i'm in ND, it's making the process take longer. The reason i'm so interested in what people have to say, is because if it's something i can fix myself and not wait weeks or months for a dealer to get to it, then i'd sure like to try. Understand Zyounker?
I don't know.. i think i might take some video of it? That way all you guys will know what it sounds like and when it does it. Maybe that'll help a bit more? Once again, this is just to see if i can fix it myself while i wait for the title. Also, just to let everyone know, I'd like to thank all you guys for your help. Now i have a few things i can tell the mechanic if i can't do it myself.
wait a minute, if you can't feel it in the drivetrain, I'm now leaning away from a rod knock. . .the thing with th rod knock, is that your pistons are slapping violently, causing severe driveline lash, which YOU WILL feel and hear in your car, regardless. . .
Oil level is okay as well. . .hmmm, this is really confusing. . .here's a stupid question, have you taken your cam belt covers off and inspected that whole area?? Accessory belts, etc?? A consistent noise that DOESn'T AFFECT your car's performance, maybe it's just a belt related issue. . .slipped when you took it to 5k or something?? Do your accessories work okay, like the AC, coolant pump (is it belt driven in an EVO?), etc?? Well, I guess you'd be overheating if your coolant pump was out. . .

Ok, well I did not see that written.. Either way.. I have yet to take a car to the dealer and have them ask to see my title.

From what your describing it seems to be a rod knock like everyone stated.
To figure out which cyl. You need a long screwdriver.
Put the shaft end of it where # 1 cyl. is at and one end to your ear.
Rev the motor to where you hear the knock and listen if its in that cyl.
Try it in all cyl. and find out which has it the loudest.
I'm guessing it would be # 4 cyl. since it's the farthest from the oil pump.
even tho you will get a misfire.. try this. pull off one plug wire. start the car and rev past 2k and see if the noise has gone away. if not on to the next cyl. if its a lower end knock i think it will go away when your not putting a load on that piston. that will atleast tell you if it truly is in the block, or elsewhere.
anyone know if im right or not?
the thing thats weird is you say the knock does not increase with the rpm's. i would think a rod knock will knock faster with the rpm's increased.

Welp, just went through a HUGE snow storm so i couldn't get too much done. Before it did, i took a closer look and listen. Tried everything everyone asked and still nothing. Couldn't figure it out.
And what's this about not needing a title or proof the car belongs to me before using the warranty? I wasn't aware of this? As of today, i believe the title is now in my name, but you mean to tell me that i could have taken this car in with no proof that it's mine and they would have warrantied it? Doesn't sound right, but damn. Didn't even think to try.

Yes, of course.
The dealership will look up your car with the VIN number. As long as the car is still within warranty (and the warranty has not been voided), you shouldn't have a problem. OEM warranties are transferrable. A quick lookup of the VIN will tell the dealer the in-service date (date when the car was first sold) and verify that you are within the time and mileage allowed by the warranty.
I thought your issue was with having the nearest dealer 4 hours away and not wanting to drive that far or pay for the tow?
In any event, pickup the phone and call them...now.
Good luck!

So yes, i did infact through a rod. Strange. The dealer just instaled a whole new engine under warranty and it should be done today. When i go pick it up this weekend, i'll see if i can get pics of the old engine. The dealer didn't even ask me any questions either. My insurance paid for it to get towed to the nearest warranty place (in my case 4 hours away) on a flat bed. A few days later i called to make sure they got it since i hadn't heard from them. They said i through a rod and they just got a new enging in that day for it and to come by the shop next week to pick it up. That was pretty painless i thought? I'll post again with pics or if i learn anything else new. I suppose nobody else has yet to experience this? Guess i just had a stupid engine maybe....
