HELP! My 05 Evo has knock!

I'm driving normal. Not doing anything stupid, oil is normal, no smoke, no indications of anything. I take a turn at a light and bring it up quickly to about 5k RPM in 2nd gear. All of a sudden i start hearing something as i'm accelerating (sp?). Sounds like somethings cought in my tire so i ignore it. About a mile down the road i'm at a red light and i look out the window to see if anything is on my tire and as i do so, i hit the gas a little bit and KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! I have a lot of my buddies in seperate cars driving with me so we all pull over and check it out.

Here's what i've noticed. It starts knocking after 2k RPM and continues on up the RPM band until I let off. If i hold it steady, nothing. Only makes knocking sounds as i'm applying more gas. Whats more, the knocking sound it self doesn't speed up or slow down as i apply more gas. It stays at a constant speed. The sound is FOR SURE comeing from inside the engine it self. The car has 10,600 miles on it so i'm still under warrenty. I was just curious if anyones had the same problem or know of something i can check Sunday since the dealer will be closed? I asked my buddy if it'd be worth it to pull the valve cover off and take a look, but he thinks it sounds like rod knock or something more internal. OH, also, my boy with a dsm has a data logger that we hooked up. It showed the rpms reving and things of that sort, but didn't show any knock? Anyone have any ideas?

Edit: Anyone know of any 05 recals other than the radiator hose? Again, this DID NOT happen under harsh driving. It was normal shifting and driving. Nothing higher than about 5k RPM's.

I hope that you have not started to mod it yet, but if the knock does not very with RPM then it is not a rod knock. Other then your saying that it sounds constant, then I would take a guess at rod knock. I would not drive it until you take it to the dealer anyway....

92 oct. The guy that sold me the Evo told me he's heard about the rod bearing going out in a MR too and figures that's it as well.

Blowing rod bearings is a very bad thing.

Is this a common issue among Evos? I've spoken with a buddy of mine, and he commented that "1 of 4 Evos leave the factory with motor problems." Whether his information was factual, I obviously can't comment on, but what's the deal? is this accurate information?

I seriously doubt it.

Good, because I am seriously considering an Evo as my next purchase (in a few years).

Really? I was just starting to dally with the thought of an STi instead of an Evo when I replace the Ralliart in a couple years...

As for knock, it might just be bad gas. Has it been like this for awhile? Maybe run some fuel additive or add a little hi-test into the tank and see if that helps.

Ya know, I test drove both models, and the reasons that I decided on the STi over the Evo were mainly because of the reputation for reliability that Subaru has, and I've just always loved the STi.

I found the ride in the STi to be a little bit softer, and since the car is a daily driver, I leaned towards a more acceptable ride. I found it to accelerate and handle well, plus it just seemed like it had better quality than that of the Evo.

When I drove the Evo, I found the ride to be very punishing, and the steering to borderline on twitchy. It just seemed like keeping the Evo on the road was much more "involving" than that of the STi. I felt like if I had sneezed, I would end up on the shoulder of the road!

I find the STi to be a "road car," while I find the Evo to be geared more of a "track car."

While I find the STi to be the more well-rounded package, I find the Evo to have an excellent performance potential. The Evo is nearly just as fast as the STi in a straight line, and has a noticeable handling advantage.

My take on both cars is this:

The STi and the Evo achieve the same results, but in different ways. While the Evo is a "scalpel," the STi is a "steak knife." The Evo gets around the track with precision, while the STi gets around the track with force.
