Friendly competition?

With my impending purchase of the Evo my friend has ah.. how do you say, become rather competitive and serious about his car. He was pretty "eh" about aftermarket stuff, but now that he no longer has the nicer car he's going to beef it up some to compare with the Evo or something?

It's really funny, he owns a Infiniti G20t, which isn't a bad car in it's own right, but definitely not in the Evo class. I'd have to say it's more luxury than sport anyway... He got a new Tein suspension along with 18" rims (18's? I dunno, I recommended 17s but he really wanted the 18s for looks). And on top of that, he's gonna shell out for a turbo that'll cost him $3000, which will supposedly give him 350 at the wheel. Kinda scary for a car like that huh? I guess it gives him pissing rights at the stop lights but on a track his 350hp probably isn't gonna do him any good with that car, not to mention it's got a FWD drivetrain anyway...

Anybody else getting this sort of competitive treatment from the neighborhood or friends?

Nah, but my friend got a PT Cruiser when they first came out, and everyone thought his car was the shiz, even me. I got an eclipse in July, and ever since then he's been jealous, even admitting it. He keeps asking where I get all this money for all this stuff and things like that, I wish he'd mind his business and let a working man do his job. lol

ah..but the g20t is a FWD car. After about 200-250 in a fwd car the excess power is just a pretty number. Its about how you can lay down the power.

Yea, since we are talking about this, I guess I will mention my problems. I wanna make my OZ fast, but short of forced induction, I always hear it is hard to make a four-cylinder perform. There in that statement holds my problem. I don't have the money for some freaking turbo yet, so what can I do to my OZ Lancer to make it faster.

I know exactly what you mean with the comp. Well, kinda. My friend got a 2002 Celica right after I told him I planned on it, and now that I own a 2003 Lancer OZ, he wants to trade it in for a Lancer EVO 8. Coincidence? Maybe, but it sure pisses me off. He's my "home boy" or "dogg" or whatever you wanna call it so I certainly don't wanna get mad at him, but it is crap, man. His main problem is that his 'rents wont let him modify his Celica so he wants a faster car. I dunno, more power to him joining the brotherhood of Mitsubishi Another friend of mine just got an Eclipse yesterday, a 1995 model so I am super happy for him. The power is spreading!

Your friend is harshly dilusional if he thinks that he is going to get 350fwhp by slapping on a $3000 turbo alone. Getting that kind of power out of that engine takes a lot more than $3000 and a lot of know-how.

I think it'll be funny for you to watch your friend take on this sort of project. It's not the right car to start with in my opinion. You might want to let him know that it costs about $20-25k to turn a 255 hp FD into a 470 hp FD....and that gives me 400rwhp, only 50 above his mark.

Lancer,
You want to make your OZ fast huh? Well, besides basic mods I wouldn't go any further. I just feel its not the right layout to spend mucho money on. If you have some extra money, pay your car off and/or save for the Evo.

The basic ways to make your OZ fast w/o forced induction would be intake, headers, exhaust. I did an intake and headers on my 90 Accord before I stopped b/c I realized that those two mods were really expensive for me (at the time) and I wasn't getting huge increases. I still drive that car until my Evo comes in, and it is very fun to drive for what it is. If you want some more ump..get a set of headers and an intake and/or possibly an exhaust. I wouldn't go past that.

Another route you can do is to keep the regular bolt-ons (intake, header, exhaust) and then make your car fast in the corners instead of a 1/4 monster.

Wow this is funny because I have had this same situation or very similar. When I first bought my OZ everyone was like wow, so my friend bought a SpecV sentra which is roughly 170hp so he is like man now your car is slow. So I went into the works on my car tuning it up so i can stay up. So I was going to slap a turbo on which after a while i had enough money, but than realized i have enough cash for a down payment and i could afford an evo which was basically everything i wanted to do to my oz but in one big financning package. He yet has seen my car but he told me the other day he got headers, so i am going to surprise visit him this weekend. But than i have a friend on the other hand who is well off and his family buys hims everything. He went from having a RSX to a G35 sedan which is to luxury for me, but now he has a deposit on a STI to compesate for me. I don't really care because now in owning the car I don't really have much competition, but i am proud to be an owner of an actual evo in usa. I can now understand why this car is held high over the world of cars, not the top but a high standard.

Yeah, I have no clue about the validity of his project(s) either. I think he read up on a G20t forum somewhere on the net where there seems to be a general consensus on what to upgrade and what will work. At one point he did consider getting a SR20DET engine swap, but decided that the turbo would be more effective. I really have no clue though.... but like I said, taking into consideration his FWD drivetrain, unless he's doing drag strip racing it's not really gonna help him at all. I think he's just jealous I'm going to have a better car, so he's going to try to have at least something comparable (though hp numbers are cheap talk)

Wow, $25K is a pretty pricey investment! Though a 400rwhp FD must be pretty damn nice!

Ah, I just can't wait to be driving the Evo.. something about the performance and speed of a well built vehicle just gets my adrenaline rushing!

Well, that's to get a reliable 400rwhp. there's lots of things to consider and things add up pretty fast. Tones of things need to be upgraded to produce and/or handle the power. Turbo kit, bov, wastegate, ecu, ignition, fuel system, intercooler, rad, oilcooler, intake, exaust, clutch, and even possibly the tranny. The sweat and tears to put it all together. I'm sure I've left some stuff out. Not to mention the wheels, suspention, and brake upgrades to actually make the power somewhat useable. 400rwhp is scary enough as it is, I can't imagine 350fwhp going anywhere but a straght line.

I recommend that you just sit back and relax and enjoy your Evo. Your friend is going to have to invest a whole lot more than the price of a new Evo to compete with you performance wise.
