Here is IL law on exhaust...thoughts?

(625 ILCS 5/12‑602) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑602)
Sec. 12‑602. Mufflers, prevention of noise.
Every motor vehicle driven or operated upon the highways of this State shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler or exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise. No such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this Section.

do you know is this is the latest version of the law? I know I read a while back that IL was trying to totally ban aftermarket exhausts and SEMA got involved and put a halt to that for the time being but haven't seen any new news about it. Is this the final, it still seems kind of vague doesn't mention actual db that noise levels have to be under. Just wondering if anyone knows.

IMO it's just another way for the law to profile import cars b/c how often do you see an mustang or camero pulled over for noise violation...

Just like on other states. It's valid. Deal with it. Enjoy the 1 or 2 points on your liscense as it is a moving violation.

At least it's not a moving violation in Virginia. I chalk it up as paying a "noise tax" 2 or 3 times a year.

i got pulled over doin 25 with an ams exahust, not very loud when not spooling and at 2000 rpms. but they wanted some money that day. i guess the law is b/c its soo dangerous to have an exhaust that is louder then what the factory made it as no matter how restrictive. not that it is anywhere near as loud as a diesal, motorcycle, most V8s, etc... oh it must be because fuel economy improves so you use less gas and oil. who wants to help the earth though when you can make money? i also guess that petition a 1000 of us signed (out of the couple of thousand people that knew this was happening) meant nothing, but when <275 people(i am completely sure that the number is around this, no joke or exageration) call the FCC about Janet Jackson's halftime "special," they increase fines from 5k to 500k when some radio djs make 80k/year and 40 million people saw it. see a common theme here. the government will only step when they make more money or get relected. any lawyers here? can they make a law has no reasoning behind it. one day we will all say enough is enough and the 290 million of us will stop the 1000 people from making laws that make no sense. like the one in Chicago where you cannot leave your car running if you are not in it. apparently someone stole a car like this once and used it in a driveby. although the owner of the car cannot be held liable to the damages, he can now by being fined for doing so. IL,

Whew, pretty touchy reply for a simple comment with no malice behind it.

Good luck with that.

its probably going to be an unenforced law, if the cop feels like giving you an exhaust ticket, he will. So basically nothing has changed.

Tell the cop you're Polish. It's a free pass...

Very similar to VA. Very unclear and loose for bad translation. As was mentioned above, it essentially gives Law Enforcement a bogus "reason" to pull you over and check you out, even if you're driving completely safely and otherwise normal...

get your lawyer to tell the judge that you installed the exhaust for performance increases, not noise increases.....

beyond that, all I can suggest is move to another state....

I like Naperville evo's reply. how can the government pay 100 senators and the house to sit around all day and try to make their mark by making up ridiculous laws. wasn't it virginia that wanted to pass a law that made it illegal for "undergarments" to be showing? Only thing that saved that law from being passed was a local plumbers union...and thats a true story! I mean there are some messed up laws out there...but I can honestly, unbiasedly say that this is one of the most ubsurd laws ever passed. we need a system of checks and balances in this country...

the law isn't really going to do much. All it is going to do is allow a cop to pull people over and give them a hard time. Its also illegal to drive barefoot. No one is going to ticket you for that, but if you get pulled over and you're drunk, they'll add it to the list. That's all its for. Just to give certain people a harder time. It is a stupid law, but whoever decides that this is going to be a law makes people feel all warm in fuzzy inside because we all know that its us in our modified cars breaking all the laws, so cops get to us before that happens

Dang that sucks @$$. I'm glad I got my silencer in as fast as I could. I'm tired of getting the wandering eye from the local law enforcement around here
