School Me....

I am currently sitting on 3grand and had a question. It isn't the same old what should i buy, i know what my mod. schedual is. I was just wondering if there is any difference between 18X9's and 17X9's . What are the gains from going with a bigger rim other than aeststics. I mean the widest tire ( from what the searches say) is a 255 that we can fit into the wheel well before the back fender will rub. But other than that the 18X9's that i am looking at buying are $2700 without wheels. So i am waying my options , anybody know the attributes to a larger rim size ?

less sidewall deflection, wider footprint, increased steering response, accel and brake times may suffer, steering efforct may change, I'm lazy right now so I don't want to type anymore so....

Not really sure what you're asking. You can fit 255s on 17X9s. 18s will usually be heavier, which negatively affects acceleration. They're just for aesthetics, but then again if you are getting a set of rims that costs $2700, then they should be super-high quality rims that are INCREDIBLY lightweight, right?

No War your right , I know it sounds utterly retarded but i can't remember for the life of me what brand they were ( i think they were RAYS ) and you're right that what i was saying about the 17X9's ...since they can fit 255's in them as well , truly what is the benefit from buying bigger rims other than the looks ? The guy who posted above you said something about side wall deflection but then again the side wall would have to go down to a 30 or 35 so wouldn't that make it more prone to blow outs ? The rims i was looking at were lighter than stock even as 18X9's and the only difference between the two is you can fit a big brake kit under the 18's ?!

There's no advantage other than looks. You don't need a bigger brake kit, because the only reason for even BIGGER brakes would be if you had a ton of power and were road racing a lot. If that were the case, you wouldn't use 18X9 Volk rims that cost nearly $3k when doing so...

Tell you the truth War, i have all intensive purposes of making this my 65' Mustang ( you know the car that you never get rid of, just build it up to the level of quality your happy with then move on to a play toy ). I mean, when you lower the car for suspension reasons wouldn't 17's look just fine anyway ? I mean i probably wouldn't be able to lower it that much if i had 18's on it.

The overall size would be the same the 18" would just have less sidewall

BTW, You could lower your car the same amount no matter what size wheels you are putting on it, as long as it retains the diameter of the original wheel and tire.

I appreciate the info about the wheels , like the title said i need to be schooled in this event. But in the event that you can't read what i tried to write legitamatly and honestly , i would appreciate the lack of sarcasm about my spelling. This is a relaxed forum and not an english proficency class. So please don't berude to someone just trying to learn or i will report your un-cunstructive criticism (to be polite) to the moderator. Remeber you are the "EVOLVED MEMBER" and i am just a "NOOB", set the example.

Oh, and yes all spelling errors on this reply were made on purpose.
Thank you though.

cool down aux. I'm just messing with ya, there are no english teacher in here, or are there?
If we had to critique everyone on spelling, whoa, watch out. Anywhoo, I would lower your car, Powdercoat your wheels white and get a turbo kit with that kinda cash! White on White looks SWEET. I almost wish i had bought white instead of black, White on white is just sexy!

I don't understand why people spend so much money on asthetics on an evo when they can put all that money into performance parts and the car would still look good.

I would love to have $2700 to spend on the motor, or by coilovers. Not big rims and dropping it, which actually hurts your performance.

I mean, why are you asking what gains come from bigger wheels? How about a gain of an extra "oooh" when someone sees your evo and says "wow, nice wheels".

Actually, Aux, you are REQUIRED to use proper spelling and grammar. It is a forum rule, so you not only would be wrong for reporting someone for correcting you, but you'd be wrong for not following the forum rules.

This is a relaxed forum, but that does not excuse the lack of basic, elementary school grammar and spelling.

To answer you question. People do it because for some a stock evo is fast enough for them. Everybody who buys a evo are not all out for making enormous power. Some are completely happy with how fast it is stock. Thats why they put their money into cosmetics and such.
