notchy 3rd gear

What causes it? Is it the shifter itself or the shifter bushings and underhood bushings? If I install just shifter bushings and underhood bushings will that eliminate the notchiness?

I have the same feeling in 3rd gear however, it doesnt always do it. Though, I've noticed when I shift into 3rd at lower rpms I get it.

I noticed that too in my Evo, and I have about 670 miles on the car.

I would think it would get smoother over time, and I also notice it gets smoother when the car warms up.

BTW how many miles you have on your Evo?

well I been to local Mitsu dealer couple times and they told me its fine ........ I even have some axis noise but they said this car supose to have some noise .. dont know if its true but its what I have got from 3 different dealership ..... so I guess i am going to local car shop pros and have them to check it out ....

Evo = 120% worth the money
Mitsu Service = 100% wasting time.....

ok hope everything is ok...

My car now has 1900 miles on it. Its really weird how it comes and goes though. I'm use to it now thinking its just the nature of the clutch

Bingo! Give the man a cigar ... the EVO shifter is notchy by design ... especially the 5 speed ... part of the notchiness is because the fluid has not warmed up and is thicker when it is cold. Replacing shifter and under hood bushings does nothing of the notchiness ...

ineedevo: your 2-3 gear synchro might be going bad ...

sounds like a synchro.. if so you'll wanna get that fixed before you lose third gear completely

Mine does it in third gear as well. Only at lower rpm's and when it isn't warmed up. I have BG syncroshift for fluid and it helped a little. When I run second to 4500 or above it usually is fine going into third. Oh, and downshifting from fourth to third is no problem.

You guys won't always get a smooth shift into 3rd.

1st gear...triple syncro
2nd gear...triple
3rd gear...double
4thgear single
5thgear...single

As you can see, you have to go through 2 syncros to get in 3rd gear. If one of the syncros don't line up. You'll get that notchy feel. But if both syncros are aligned...it's buttaaah.

Lighter trans fluid might help. But I think it's just a normal thing to be notchy.
