Has anyone experienced the notchiness, over time, turning into a grind? I have an '03 (with only 23,000 mile) and experience the notchiness, especially when it is cold. When warm it occasionally notches.
I am scared of the notch turning into grind and the warranty running out.

Mine does the same thing...It comes and goes through, haven't really narrowed it down to a specific time when it occurs.

Hmm, my third gear is smooth to get into daily, however 4th gear is a bit notchy for me, but I don't mind it.

Had my 03 with my 5th being notchy. Eventually it did turn into a grind, but traded in the vehicle before anything else went. It grinded when it was cold, warm, when I put it in slow, when I put it in fast, when I put in low rpm and high rpm. This is one of the reasons why I might not purchase another EVO I am tired of paying 27K+(depending on the model) and having issues that we should not have! If I do purchase another EVO, it will be used and I am going to redue everything, especially the tranny and clutch. No use in buying a brand new vehicle and having to do all of that right away. Just my .02

I called a few dealers and they said to bring it in. One said it might have something to do with the clutch. The subtitle under his statement was:"I'm going to try to blame you for a flawed synchro." He went on to say that they will remove the clutch first and if its ok they will tear down the tranny and see if everything is ok. I will give it a few more thousand miles and see if it gets worse. Bothersome though that this could occur at 23,000. Makes me wonder how the rest of the car will last. I'll keep you all posted.

Isn't there a TSB for 03 for 3rd and 5th gear syncros?

My 3rd gear is smooth as buttah, but my 2nd gear is impossible to shift into in the mornings (hence I normally do a 1-3 shift).

Running stock fluids.

That's how mine is also. Noticed alot last night actually when I was shifting slow. It's different with different cars cause my 2nd is smoothe as can be, but 3rd is notchy. I got an 03' VIII with 12K miles on it.
