$36k question MR or Used 911
its all in ur daily driving needs. the evo is obviously way more practical. i think id rather take a brand new evo, then a used Porsche with 47k miles on it. i love the porsche and its very pimp, buy for me the evo is king!
With snow tires the 996 is good in the snow. That said you need to make sure you get a car with stability control (and this one has it) as even on dry pavement the car can be too much fun with power oversteer.
There is no question in my mind that the 996 is built much better than the Evo. I have worked on both and believe my opinion is based in fact on this point.
On the depreciation point, check the numbers. No modern Porsche is holding its value at this point. This trend started in '02 and hasn't stopped. If you are concerned with depreciation, then you need to purchase a much more limited production Porsche (for more money.) While a 993 is the last of a long run of oil cooled 911's, it isn't that special in the final analysis.
Be aware that the cost of parts on the 996 is huge as compared to the Evo. A shop manual for the 996 was $400-$500, but I have the sense that the cost has gone up in the last few years.
The '01 was the last of a multi-year run before a mid-life upgrade was done to the product in 2002. Thus one can consider the '01 as having the least number of issues and the TSB's (or lack of them) are proof of this fact.
You can debate performance between the Evo and the 996 (the Evo wins with mods), but the 996 is simply a more refined drive than any Evo will ever be.

I would get the new MR, you will know exactly what has happened to the car (because you will have done it) and not be worried about every little sounds you hear, plus Porsche maintenance and upkeep is a lot more than oil changes and 300 15K for a new car.
Yes. Please consider maintenance cost. I agree with most posts here. They are 2 totally different cars.
I tend to consider everything. Fun, Style, future worth, cost of ownering. But most here like the MR so what's your choice?

MR. Ive drove several 911s even a 911 4s and its still not as fast as the evo. Porsche is more class but id never want to work on one. Just ot change the sparkplugs prob cost big bucks. Either way the mr will be faster its new and maintence will be less.
I'm going with the Evo MR.
Sure, Porsche 911s are great cars, but they also require great maintenance and repair costs. It's also unlikely you'll get a warranty with the 911, at least not one for 10yrs/100,000 miles, as I believe are offered on Mitsubishis now.
Also rest assured that the MR isn't going to have the **** beaten out of it, and you'll be getting the best part of the car's life.
I wouldn't have to think twice about it. MR all the way. Now, if a brand new 911 cost $34,000, that's a different story....

I don't think you can get a decent 01 996 C2 for $34,000, matbe a 1999 996, which is the first year. Beware of Rear Main Seal Leaking (RMS) problems on the 996 cars.
I would agree with some of the other comments about getting a 993 (or 964) over a 996. You hould be able to get a decent one for $35,000, but of course it won't have a warranty. On the other hand it won't depreciate like the Evo.
FWIW, I own an 05 Evo, but I have spent quite a bit of time driving my friends 92 964 C2 with Big Red brakes and H and R syspension and it is a terrific car.
