Just a thought... Stay away from the 996 and get a 993! Better car, same money and less depreciation. Besides the 993 is the last gen of the oil cooled hand built quality Porsches
The 996 was produced in much higher volumes and will continue to depreciate -- rapidly.
I went from my 993 to the EVO -- loved both cars

Nice. Which do you tihnk will be worth more (thinking resale) in 2 or 3 years time? That should the the question you answer to determine your choice.
What ever the answer, I'll go with the 911.
Just my humble opinion.

As with many questions posted on this forum, the answer depends upon your goals. With the Porsche, you make a different "statement" than you would with the Evo. You will garner a different sort of attention with each, and if that means anything to you, that may help you make your decision. If performance is your objective, the answer is obvious (Evo). One last thing to consider is the maintenance cost of each. I owned the cheapest kind of Porsche (Boxster) and was still in shock every time I left the dealer. However, you get a different caliber of quality with Porsche. Even still, the cost of ownership should be a large consideration here if your disposable income is somewhat limited.
Good luck and have fun with whichever you choose!

i am a porsche fan and normally for me porsche > everything (even if i won the lottery for 47659457 billion dollars my car would be either a 996tt or a GT3). however, unless you are talking about the 4S, i would go for the MR. the regualr 996 is an amazing car but not as exciting as the MR. the 996 4s or the TT are a different story and they are just plain amazing. the MR is also an amzing car but it lacks that "character " the porsches have. from the amazing engine sounds to the high quality yet very simple interior, the porsches are special for sure. also, with the porsche you will have that more successful mature image (not importnat to alot of people but if you work with clients, it will say that you are successful). people who don't know cars will not appreciate the MR and will just look at it as another souped up japanese car where almost all people know porsche. again, i love the evo and it is an amazing car but FOR ME it would be 996 or 993 all the way. hell, i would save up a bit more and get the CAYMAN. an handling that can rip an EVO apart while having that porsche name and badge
Go for the MR.
From a costing standpoint. The operating cost of the 911 is expensive! Service is $750+ a pop. 10 quarts of oil per oil change (air cooled version).
Porsche parts are $$$$$
But if money is not a problem, then a 993 is definitely a nice car to have.

Correct -- the comparison is between 2 great cars. One costs in depreciation and one will cost in maintenance. Both are fantastic cars!
993 catches fire quite easily bcoz its air cooler ,
I saw at least 3 of them caught fire
and one of them turns from normal to fumes running after the back in 30 sec ..
993 is a bit too old ...
needs to know how to service it myself before buying

oh, i diidn't ask you where you live...
if you live in an area where it snows, than the MR is the winner hands down no questions asked. also, iff you need practicallity, the MR also wiins. 4 door AWD means that the car can be used any time for everything. a 996 is not very practical and the RWD will not make a good driver when it snows
