Unhappy Was in an accident last night.

Never thought I'd be posting a thread like this, let alone so soon.

I was driving home last night around 9:30 with my roommate. I was heading south on 29 here in Columbia onto 108 West. The exit basically takes a quick right, quick left, then a hard right. The posted exit speed was 35, I was probably going 50-55 (the speed limit on 29 was 55). Into the first turn was fine, came around to the second, and my tail end just completely let go. It did a right-left sway, and just when it felt like I had it straight, the end spun around FAST. I ended up hitting the guard rail on the inside of the turn at about 5mph (backwards). What irked me is as it was coming to a stop I could tell it was ALMOST stopped... 6 inches sooner and I would have been fine, just shook up. Nobody was injured, and the car was driveable. My roommate even said "What the heck happened, you had it going straight and it felt like something pushed you around?".

The damage looks to be totally cosmetic, although a fair amount done because the brunt was right on the front left corner. Headlight is done, hood is bent a little (but didn't see any wrinkles), bumper was scuffed bad, quarter panel dented in (point of impact looked to be right on the left side of the light), rear quarter panel scuffed, rear bumper scuffed. Strangely enough both doors were without a mark.

What I'm still trying to figure out is what the heck happened. I wasn't driving like an idiot (thankfully I have a witness), and I went on a backroads country drive the night before for a quick drive, didn't once even squeel wheels and I know I had to have been going faster then. The only explanation I could come up with was maybe the advans not gripping like they should when it was about 38-40 degrees outside, and the fact that the quick left right turn awoken the drift happy beast that is the evo.

Needless to say, I'm really frustrated, and really wish I could turn my brain off, because it just keeps playing it over and over and over. I dropped the car off at the body shop today (not going the mod route in case I have to sell it if my insurance sky-rockets).

I'll post some pics later.

Sorry to hear that bro. Hang in there, it'll be back to new before you know it. I think colder temps may have had something to do with it. Got to be careful this time of year, mine did the same thing the other day.

You never know if some dipsh!t in his dirtbag chrylser blew a gasket and dumped a bunch of oil or overheated and spilled coolant in a corner. If only there were a corner worker waving a yellow and red flag to tell you that there is fluid on the road.

Thanks for the support guys. I just drove the exit again, I wanted to see if I could see anything. The skid marks were bizzare, I didn't even see them cross, only when I was going sideway straight towards the guard rail (leading me again to believe the loss of traction was due to the tires letting go, not skidding). Weirder still is how far up it was, way beyond where the apex should have thrown me out, and how I ended up sliding towards the inside of the turn. I'm truly baffled.

I do hope I get her back soon. Its like dropping off your kid at the hospital for surgery. I wonder if they have visiting hours?

Oh, and the rental they stuck me in is a 2004 Ford Focus ZX4. Everyone that complains Mitsubishi's suck, they can't hold a candle to Ford. No arm rest (my biggest gripe), terribly bland interior, no automatic locks, no electric windows, no pickup (and I mean none, comparing this to my old Lancer), cup holders too far back to be practical, window lever pressing into my leg... I'm going to try and trade up when they get something else in. I feel like Lady Luck just flipped me the and then showed me some pressed ham.

Yep, rocking the Advans, and they were still in great condition. I never launched my car, never even squeeled tires (with the exception of last night, they don't seem to like to roll sideways).

And yeah, I love that exit too. I live right off of it on Columbia Road, and have taken it so many times just as fast if not faster than that. Its good to know that someone else who's taken it knows what an Evo can handle on it. Some things you just can't control.

My first question whenever I hear something like this is:

What pressures were you running in your tires?

People seem to almost always underestimate the effects tire pressure has on handling.

If you were running reasonable pressures, I'd say temp is the culprit. The consensus seems to say that 40 degrees and below will turn the Advans into plastic.

While the Advans are amazing tires, the downside to them is that you will get little to no warning before they let loose. The one thing I liked about taking mine off and putting all seasons on is the warning I would get while pushing my luck. Be careful out there.

I was running stock pressure.

All seasons will be the very next thing I do to the car when I get it back, possibly sooner if I can have the body shop put them on while they're doing their work.

dont want to sound like a deush but you will definately learn from this...the reason your car swung so hard was the momentum from you trying to overcorrect the loss of traction.

I have lost my back end and overcorrected just like YOU did, but thankfully I was doing this in a safe place and not an exit ramp with huge metal guard rails =\ .

You wont be taking turns like that again for a while...trust me

im going to go with everyone else here.. advans in cold weather. i had a similar experiance in my old jeep which was full-time 4wd.. back end just came around on an offramp in rural PA. good to hear youre alright and the car is mostly cosmetic. guess this is a sign we should all start switching to winter tires
