Good tools as a modding starter kit
Good tools as a modding starter kit
I was wondering if someone (possibley a mechanic) could tell me of a good combination of tools i should purchase for bolt-on modding and maintenance, to moderate tuning like cams and turbo upgrades. I typically use my friends tools, but now that i bought a house i would like my own set, The thing is he has over $3000 worth of tools, i would like to spend no more then $500, any speciality tools i can burrow from him. Also ideas of a good package i can buy from maybe a company like snap-on or something. Thanks in Advance
Head to Sears and check out the packages they have. They're affordable and most of the tools have a lifetime warranty so just drop by with the broken tool to get a new one.
Things you want to look for are
- 1/4" rachet (normal and deep metric sockets with extensions)
- 3/8" rachet ""
- 1/2" rachet "
- 1/2" breaker bar
- universal swivel head sockets for the rachets
- racheting wrenches (they are REALLY helpful)
- open and box end wrenches
- torque wrenches (ft-lb and in-lb)
- allen keys (or allen sockets)
- screwdrivers
- floor jack
- jack stands

I personally don't think you can ever have enough tools my tool box is worth more than any vehicle i have ever owned and i still find myself needing more -
but this is a great start
Go to Sears and buy the $200 4 drawer ratchet set as a start. Craftsman are great, as you can exchange them any time the store is open should a tool go bad and not have to wait for a tool truck to come around.
snap on is NICE but cost wise, suited to thieves and good mechanics.
you can find good tools at sears, home depot, lots of places. Most all are "lifetime" , read that as, " as long as we are in business."

Yes, you really want both torque wrenches. Also, get the factory shop manual.

i have over 10,000 dollars in tools, and you know what, i still dont have the right tools sometimes... there really isnt a list someone can make.. just buy your basics, and with 500 you wont get much, unless you go to home depot... alot of there stuff is decent..
true, but most people arent mechanics for a living... besides, most of mac hand tools are just a name..

thats what i am saying if you spend 10,000 at sears you will get what you would pay 50,000 at snap on, matco, or mac
I have both sears at home and at work i got a variety of all four, plus some off brands.
