Lancer - Poor Crash Test Ratings
Lancer - Poor Crash Test Ratings
I just read the latest review on safety from NHTSA....

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released safety ratings for 14 vehicles. Hyundai's Sonata and Tucson joined the Mercedes-Benz ML Class as the only vehicles getting 5 stars in all of the crash tests.
The not so good news is that only one vehicle, the Pontiac G6 2-DR Coupe, received 5 stars in the rollover test. Also, the Mitsubishi Lancer 4-DR got just 2 stars in the driver side crash test. The Toyota Scion xB 4-DR and Dodge Dakota were rated the most likely to rollover.
European crash results were also released today, and the Citroen C6 was the first vehicle to earn the maximum 4 stars in pedestrian protection. Most of the vehicles tested received just one or two stars, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee was alone in getting a pathetic zero rating.
NHTSA does not, but should test for pedestrian safety, so if they don't want to develop their own, why not implement the European test? Or am I wrong and American drivers don't care?
My question is, Is there any difference between the Lancer 4-door side impact beams or safety compared to the EVO VIII?

Evo does not have side air bag, or curtain air bag. This may explain why Evo received 2 stars.

i have to concur, why is it that in all the consumer guides, the evolution gets classed w/ lancers even though they are clearly different cars despite their shared alias. we all know that the frame, build, and rigidity of the evo is in comparison to the base lancer so why do they share the same (poor) safety rating. i've seen people walk away from some very major incidents so doesnt that account for something?

You must look at how the NHTSA rates. They say the 5 stars is least likely to be injured. When you get down to 1 star there is a better (read: higher percentage) chance that you will be injured in that type of accident (frontal offset or side impact).
If you look at other cars with optional side air bags their star rating rises on those models so equipped. So "theoretically" a lancer or evo could most likely bump to a 4 star rating if it had side airbags since head injuries are prevalent in side impact crashes.
