high flow cat vs test pipe

im currently running catless but thinking about getting a cat because im moving to chicago where there is emission test every so often... and i don't want to get caught without it...

heres my question...would changing an test pipe with a high flow cat affect performance?...i did some search but couldn't find any definite answers...

and any recommendations of high flow cats??/

Yes, of course, HFCs flow much less than test pipes. If you're worried about emissions inspections, then just unbolt your test pipe, slap in the stock cat, then go get inspected. Come home, and do the switcharoo. That's what's great about a test pipe vice the one piece downpipe/cat-delete combos.

Yes, you can take the heat shielding from the stock cat and rig it to surround the test pipe. That would easily pass visual inspection.

I have a UR HFC gutted out 10 % for even more flow. it looks like one of those stock cat on normal cars. It even has slight rust on flanges just like stock cat. and keep your stock cat for later state inspections. you can buy mine and gut out 100 %.
I will sell you cheap. 60 dollars shipped if you want.

All this time driving in chicago I've never been pulled over and "inspected" to see if I had a cat. Hell for a couple months I was driving my 2g dsm around with no front bumper and only a fmic; a ton of cops saw me and non of them cared.

As long as your car does not Throw "Check Engine soon", you are fine in Chicago. Emission test only takes 5 mins to be completed. No1 will stop you and inspect whether you have a cat or not.

That's what happened to my Bro's Eclipse.

Had my mustang pass emissions with h pipes with no cats, loud as hell. all they do in chicago is an OBD test, no CEL, its all good. dont worry about a HFC.

I personally performed back to back testing on a dyno going from a test pipe to a high flow cat. At the same boost pressure I saw a drop of 10 HP at the wheels on a dyno dynamics chassis dynometer.

The smell alone is horrible. It would definitely attraction more attention. Or if you have roadside smog machine like in california, youll be in big trouble.
