Everyone has said some good ways to diagnose a bad clutch, try doing a start in 5th gear as well and if the car dies right away your clutch is not too bad. If it starts moving for a while you're clutch is expanding and won't be long before you slip into oblivion

now if the clutch is still good then the car should stall and die right away and if the clutch just slips and doesn't kill the car then its going out.

not sure how good of a test that is though but it seems true.
I was thinking the same thing a 5k drop wouldn't be good in any gear especially if I wondering about clutch probs thanks though I think I am gonna take warrtalon's advice he seems to know his shi*t

Please do not do this. One guy already said this and got blasted. It's much easier to just put it in 5th gear at low speed while driving and then floor it until full boost hits like I said earlier.

Yeah no problem the 5th gear on the freeway thing works too....

Been there done that, I just figured since he was kind of a newbie to MT this would be a bullet-proof way....flame on

Bulletproof? It's a dumb thing to do, especially when unsure about your clutch. Why would you do something like that to harm it further. The method I prescribed is not dangerous and does no harm to the car.

I'm not telling you to rev the **** out of it like midevo, just let the idle take over. In fifth gear you're still putting a load on the clutch so that's harming it too...

Shouldn't be any argument here because both methods are used by even dealers.

well then, the dealers are idiots also.... do you understand how much you have to slip the clutch to get the car rolling from a 5th gear start? Even if you do it at low rpm's, it's murder on the clutch. NOT a good idea.

The clutch is less likely to slip at idle than it is under full load while driving and at full boost. These are completely separate situations. No, putting load on the clutch in 5th gear while driving does not harm the clutch.

I wouldn't use what a dealer does to support any argument related to car diagnoses.

if u dont launch the car light to light on a daily basis and the clutch wasn't messed up from the factory then the answer is no. however u mentioned u are new to manual driving so nobody knows how u have been driving the car. maybe ur driving techniques/methods caused this to happen...i'm just guessing...not sure if there's any other way to answer ur question unless we know how u've been driving ur car for the past 7k miles.

How long could one expect the stock clutch to last if you NEVER launch it and never WOT shift? And are about average for driving manual?
