+100lbs US Evo, possible to remove?

This may be naive, but I don't remember where I read so I can't research it to figure out if it's possible.

I had read that a portion of the evo was reinforced +100lbs to meet US crash regulations, I don't know if this is something that would be able to be replaced with say the JDM Equivalent, or whichever is not as heavy.

Might be someone no one has tried before , or it could be a part of the frame, as I said i'm not sure. Anyone have any more solid information?

US cars have a steel bar under the steering column/glove box and it seems JDM ones don't. Then front and rear crash bars are some ~30-40lbs and there's probably some other add ons.

You can easily lose 100lbs. After that it's harder.

You don't have to go too far:

If you buy the Buschur Upper intercooler pipe deluxe with Buschur battery will save you around 25LBS.

If you buy a aftermarket exhaust with a cat delete, you can save another 18-35lbs,buschur sells one that weight 35lbs less than stock.

Removing the stock plastic air filter box for a cone will save you another 2-3 lbs

Remove all the floor mats and you save another 12lbs

Remove rear spare and you have at least another 35lbs savings

Well, I have done everything listed above and my Evo8 MR weights with a 1/8th gas tank only 3136LBS.

At the local track when I race my cars. This track is Speed International Raceway, SIR, Tucson AZ.

Cars that I have taken to the track, raced then and weighted them:

Evo 9 GSR 3296lbs with full tank
Evo8 MR 3136 lbs 1/8 gas and some lighter weight upgrades
98 Volkwagen GTI VR6 2626LBS almost in reserve and no spare tire
91 Honda Civic SI 2190lbs
91 Eclipse GSX (AWD) no leather but moonroof 3110LBS
03 WRX some light weight upgrades and 1/8 gas tank 3042lbs

I ran and weighted all the cars listed above in the last 12 months.

Yes, they transfer the force of the collision to the frame of the car. Good thing to leave in place.

theres extra reinforcement in the doors too. Japan doesn't have stringent side impact standards.

ok lets try this

1 mini bat kit about 12 pounds less
2 take out real tire and jack 38.9 pounds
3 stock drive shift rip off put on a carbon fiber one from ams i dont know the pounds that you save on that but its more the 20+ lets say
4 a greddy ti cat back with the ti test pipe over the thouse 2 pieces are 13.3 pounds. so you save over 37.2 pounds over that maybe a lil more
5 rip out the hole inside of the car leaveing olny the driver seat. that is well over 80 pounds right there so its possible

If you're not Bill Gates and aren't priviledged enough to own a cf driveshaft you could lose almost 100 lbs for free by removing the front and rear crash bars, the spare, tools, jack, and trunk carpet.

If this technique offends some people then I will respectfully request that these people move to Canada. Bon Voyage.

The C.F. Driveshaft saves 14 lbs, plus another 2 lbs for the exhaust heat shield.
