A Porsche Carrera GT, a Cayman S, and my Evo.

Last weekend my brother got an Audi A3 3.2 for his 31st birthday. He lives in Oregon. I live in Oklahoma. I was curious to see an A3 like his in person.

I felt like driving today. It was a beautifully sunny 75 degrees. I decided to include a visit to my local Audi dealer in my list of errands I had to run. This local Audi dealer also carries Porsches and Infinitis. I remembered the Carrera GT that I drooled over this past summer. I was hoping that they still had it. I like A3s and all, especially the improved 3.2, but I had to make the 20-plus mile trip more worth my while. I got more than I bargained for.

The supercar was sold to some doctor down in Texas. However, it was returned and happened to be on the premises. It was sitting in the service department for repair of a blown clutch. Apparently, the good ole doctor got a little carried away - I might add, in more ways than one. This guy paid full price for this car - $440,000 MSRP! - yet managed to convince Porsche to cover the clutch under warranty, but only with the understanding that if it happens again, Porsche won't cover it, as clutches are not covered under warranty - no matter how expensive and exotic the car may be. The salesman told me that the damaged clutch parts alone were worth $7000! Add labor and you'll understand better how much money Porsche had to invest in one of its spoiled customers. The car was being serviced in a special shop, a spacious room that was separate from the main shop and other cars. It was all by itself in this room that I'd be happy to call my own dream garage decades from now. Dave, the salesman, let me view the car. Light from the main lot filled the room with a low, mysterious light. The silver body, in all its glory, gleamed brilliantly. It became a dream come true to see that car again. Seeing that car in that dim, strange light, in that special room, made my night a night to remember.

Oh, yeah. A special viewing of an A3 preceded the Porsche. Underneath a cover of dirt, a car EXACTLY like my brother's sat in the back lot. I didn't not like it, but, sorry to say, big brother, it looked like any other A3 to me. It was the dealer's only A3 3.2. Amazingly enough, it just happened to be the same color and have the same options as my brother's. It might as well have been his.

It doesn't end there. This dealer had a demo Cayman S. I had been wondering about this car, also, but was not expecting in the least to see it tonight, a few weeks before it officially is released for sale. The salesman told me that they were instructed by Porsche to keep it under wraps, covered for all to wonder and dream. They didn't care and decided to show it to the public anyways. Suffice it to say, I liked the Carrera GT more.

Dave, the salesman, and I talked a while after. He told me about his trip to Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) headquarters in Atlanta, where he was trained on the Cayman. This "training" included some hot laps at a road course. He told me that his daily driver is an '81 911 Carrera SC. He was very knowledgeable about cars and not a stranger to racing. He's been a Porsche salesman for 10 years.

As he walked me out, the talk turned to Evolutions, specifically my Rally Red IX RS parked out front. He was curious to see the thing up close. I showed him the motor, the gutted trunk, the interior, and he really admired it all. He was all compliments. He told me how ugly he thought WRXs are. I asked if he'd ever driven an Evo before. "No." he said. Right then and there, I became so damn curious as to what an experienced, respectable Porsche salesman, an all-around good guy who showed me a lot and was super friendly, would think of an Evo. I asked if he wanted to drive my car. He looked as if he wanted to drive it when he was checking it out. "No, no, that's all right." he said. However, I didn't let up. I insisted that he drive the car, "Come on, really. Go ahead and drive it. I want to see what you think." I kid you not, at the time he was admiring the car on the right side. I was there with him as I removed the key from my back pocket and offered it to him, when he snatched it up and smartly made his way around the back to the driver's door and sat inside. I swear I had to hurry to get in lest he drive away without me. My passenger door's window was rolled down halfway and I struggled to reach for the lever to unlock the door so I could get in already. He started the car and got positioned. He immediately remarked how comfortable and supportive the seats were. He backed up and off we went. He started out slowly, too slowly, so I encouraged him to WOT it up to redline - that it was okay. I didn't want him to hold back. I wanted his honest comparison to the Porsche Cayman he had driven in Atlanta. He managed the clutch and shifter expertly as we approached a little two-lane, wooded road that was straight but had a few mild dips, driving like I suggested to him all the while, but going overboard a little as he crested 85 in a 40 zone twice, all in a span of a quarter mile in both directions, coming to and fro'. The trees that lined the street blurred by in the darkness. This dude was having fun. I was, also. I'm damn proud of my car. I worked hard to get it. I enjoy the thing incredibly. I call it my Ferrari, as it's probably the closest thing that I'll get to owning one. I like to share my prized possessions with those who can appreciate them. It was as if I was watching myself some 40 years later. He's in his 60s.

We pulled back into the lot and another salesman joked with me as Dave and I got out of my car, saying, "You let him drive your car? He doesn't even have a license." I laughed. I then asked Dave how it compared to the Cayman. He said it pulled harder, but he believes the Cayman has the upperhand in handling. I didn't say a word. My Evo became even more of a star then. As I drove home, racing (at least in my head) on the interstate, I kept thinking, "This car is ****ing amazing!"

Hehe.....good story. I must say, we can get a little spoiled out here in socal with all the high end exotics running around. I mean, just last week, Christmas Eve actually, out at a local weekly car meet (early morning), amonst a school of Ferrari's and Porsches and Lamborgini Murcielago's and Gallardo's, sat 4 Carrera GT's and 2 Ferrari Enzo's.
For a poor EVO owning car guy it doesn't get much better.

I took my friend to pick up his g35 last spring, and his salesman, was just as curious, I let him drive my 05, he loved it, we actually got pulled over too! But the cop let him go with a "slow down" 2 days later he got fired for driving it, against company rules i guess....
