I wonder if Mitsu will sell the rear wing for the VIII in parts?

Due to the fogging and peeling of the carbon fiber, my horizontal piece (wing) needs to be replaced. Since my mileage is over the 36,000 magic number, I won't be able to get it replaced under the warranty

So instead of getting it cleared by a body shop (they can't guarantee the work because of the exposed raw CF), was wondering if we can get the 'wing' section of the spoiler to replace?

 

What happened to the wing? How did it start peeling?

I have had mine all over the place and the nly thing that is wrong with my paint, is the morrors are a bit faded.

 

It's a common problem with the VIIIs. The clear coat from the factory was not up to par so they start to fog and peel. Usually owners will get them replaced before the 3yr 36,000mi warranty is up. But I'm over that so no replacement.

 

mine was replaced under warranty ($1500 for the whole wing!) and i asked the service mgr. why they couldn't just replace the wing portion and was told it didn't come in parts, just the complete wing assembly... which i couldn't figure since it does look like it would be several pieces. go figure. they didn't let me keep the old wing, but maybe someone can chime in who has more closely looked at the assembly. oh, and i have seen several that members have had the wing re-cleared and they look fine.

So is this what I have to look forward to? Can I put a clear coat on it to protect it?

i believe the wing should be covered still. isn't the warranty to paint like 60-100K? somewhere around there?

 

No, it's only covered on the 36k not the 100k warranty. The 100k is only for drivetrain.

To answer the above question, yes I think it will help to re-clear the wing so it's thicker and help protect the CF.
From a friend of mine that works for Mitsu, the company use a supplier that used to make tennis rackets for the CF wing so that's what happened

 

Yup definitely one piece, here's a photo of what some a'holes did a year ago. I still have the mangled spoiler at home............

 

btw- the spoilers come pre-painted from the factory

 

good thing I got a sleeper trunk for when my wing goes. I have the wing on right now, but a few months back I had the Sleeper trunk installed. It only cost me $300 (150 for the trunk and 150 to paint it)
