EVO production numbers: 6000? 25,000? Unlimited?
Can anyone confim the EVO production numbers with solid references? Could the dealer be correct?
DEALER: <pricing negotionas cut out ($2500 over MSRP)> ... Now, here's what you don't know, only Diamond Chapter Of Excellence Dealers are getting the Evo and not all of them will get them. It will be limited production meaning that they will only make 25,000 for the entire country (at this time). So, your choices will be limited, I know that I will be recieving 1 every other month, and I assume that other dealers will face the same restrictions. Get back to me with your thoughts.
MY REPLY: <MSRP stuff cut out> ... You may want to double check your sources regarding the availability numbers. It was initially reported that only 6000 will be made for the US market (not 25,000 as you state). In the last two months, I have been getting reports from several sources that mitsubishi changed their plan and will now build as many EVO's as they can sell. I'll give up one of the sources if you wish to verify yourself.
Sport Compact Car, April 2003, volume 15, page 92 (the italic addendum at end of article added just before magazine went to print). You can buy the magazine in almost any grocery store.
However, it is possible that you have more current information than I, and they changed from non limited numbers back to limited (25,000). You are the only one so far to tell me this, so I'll be taking this bit if information with a grain of salt until it can be confirmed.
DEALER REPLY: <stuff cut> As for my information I get regular updates from Mitsubishi and not from out sources that can't be confirmed. Such a memo is where I got my information about what other dealers are selling the Evo for. <more other dealer MSRP stuff cut>
Soooooo..... right now I'm sticking to my 'unlimited' production numbers story. Is the above true or is it dealer grease? Please confirm with facts (references) not with 'well I heard from a friend of a friend....'

No one outside of Mitsubishi and its suppliers really knows how many they'll make if the demand continues. Just thank the dealer and tell him you're going to shop around at other dealers.
dude, hold out for a bit and the hype will die. happened with the WRX, though dealers weren't selling them for more than MSRP but they did claim that no one would be able to get one unless you pre-ordered and that they won't EVER go below MSRP on one. Now look at them! Stop at any Subaru dealer and I would be shocked if you didn't find a WRX on the lot with a dealer just itching to sell it.
the hype will die...soon.

The WRX was first a 10,000 allocation, then it turned into 12,000, then 15,000. I think that they ended us selling 25,000 for each of the first 2 years.
The above post is dead on. Give it 6-8 weeks, and the hype will be gone and you will be able to pick one up for a few hundred over invoice.
Dealers like to use a sales tactict called "impending doom". It works, even on the best of us. Just don't fall for it. Patience is virtue.

Mitsu North America stated to the press that they are building 25,000 in the initial run(s) but it is not a limeted edition vehicle as they will make as many as the demand requires. Therefore, i will be waiting for all the hype to pass so i can get an EVO under MSRP.

I heard that the JDM was getting 6500 for the first year and that the USDM would be getting atleast about the same amount. So maybe 25000 could be the total amount of units for a world release the first year.
Man I hope there aren't 25,000 Evo's being released, then it will lose its rarity status and make the value depreciate much more
is just like any corporation. Once they have a winner, I think they'll produce as much as they can, esp. judging from their lineup of cars...none of them are hot sellers so I wouldnt be suprised that the dealers will pressure
to produce more since they can easily sell the Evo @ MSRPjust my 2 cents
Well, to reflect upon this, Mitsubishi never made 25,000 Evo's in one iteration overseas, so why would they do it here? Don't give me that excuse that its the world's biggest market :lol
Overseas, Mitsubishi knows that the Evo has a very positive reputation and can't mass produce them to serve everyone, and over here, it would most likely be the same. There's no way the Mitsu plant in Japan can handle the production of 25,000 USDM Evo's each year, its just not feasible in my opinion.

said that they're only making 4500-5000 units in the US. That's it. I figure by August, they won't be shipping anymore.Get em while you can folks, they won't be around long.
Actually 25k would be more than half of the all Evo production ever.
So 46,000 Lancer Evolutions have been produced in total not including the VIII.
For perspective this is a list of the top selling cars(no trucks) in the US for 2001. The monthly production of Honda civics is 46.6K.
