EVO production numbers: 6000? 25,000? Unlimited?
Even if the production was "unlimited" I wouldn't expect Mitsubishi to be able to sell more than a few thousand Evos this year here in the states. There so many other cars coming out in the same or lower price segments and they aren't filling any niche like the WRX did when it came out.
There is direct competition, the WRX STi. There's more luxury in the G35 or IS300. There's less of a "boy-racer" image in the 350Z and RX-8. There's cheaper cars like the WRX, Mazdaspeed Protege, SRT-4.
The Evo is an enthusiasts car, and the Evo enthusiast is definitely a small portion of the population. Then when you add on the $30k price tag, you exclude a lot of people. But you have to pay to play, right?
4,500 or 6,500, whatever number is "real," is probably a good production number for the first year. Even if the prdouction was "unlimited" I still think you'd only see that many cars sell anyways. This car isn't going to "take off" like the WRX. And IIRC the WRX was slated for 10k units in the first year and that was bumped to 15k by year-end. I don't think it was 25k like someone posted earlier.
And remember that Mitsubishi still has to make the cars for the rest of the world and the racing teams and such too. They're not going to fire up the production line for little onesey-twosey runs for some US guy who's going to buy the car at invoice. There would have to be a lot of demand in order for them to justify shipping more boats full of cars over. And considering that there are cars here, now, sitting on the lots, not selling... why should they make more?
Blame the lack of sales on the markups if you wish. But there have been many cars in the past few years that have sold like hotcakes, even with big markups on them. That's REAL demand for a car. This car seems to have a bunch of people that say they'd buy at MSRP, chances are most wouldn't buy even at MSRP and are just using the markups as an easy excuse not to buy the car.

Good post. I agree w/you the evo has always been a limited production car since it's birth. Just look at the chart posted above. Would you really want 25,000 evo's out on the street? Kinda nice that not everyone can get one. If you can't get the evo this year, then wait till next year. It may be a limited production car, but they are not going to just make the evo for one year?
a limited run of 5-6000 wouldn't make much difference anyway, look at the S2K, they are limited run, I can drive down the street and get on though, used. If it was limited to say 2000 like the Galant VR4 I would see an issue getting one, but 5-6K, please.
