2nd Gear Oddities

Is it me, or is anyone else having some trouble doing 1-2 shifts? I know there was another thread where someone was snagging at the neutral gate before 2, but that's not the problem I'm getting. I've been driving a lot more these past couple days, I maybe put on close to 100 miles in just 2-3 days from just cruising around at night while bored, so I feel like I've gotten a pretty good feel for the clutch/tranny.

Anyway, I've found that when shifting into 2nd, it takes an abnormally long time to engage... I dunno why, none of the other gears are having this problem, not 1st either, just 2nd. It's like, after I shift and I release the clutch, it seems like an eternity before it actually engages so I can accelerate smoothly. I mean, it's one thing if I'm trying to go fast but it's rather annoying to have 2nd gear jerk like that. Kinda odd... should I get it checked out?

ps. I can drive manual fine.

EDIT: Actually to be honest I'm used to driving on pretty worn out clutches and the Evo clutch is a new experience for me. Are there maybe things that I should take note of? Although so far, this 2nd gear thing is the only thing annoying me.

I've noticed on some manuals that after they have warmed up and the gear lube is on all the moving parts they shift alot smoother. I say if it only acts like that when it first starts up, thats probably normal, but if its like that after driving you might wanna ask mitsu about it. Also, some manuals dont like to downshift into 2nd at higher speeds.

I've heard this before... I still cannot find any problems with a 1-2 shift..!? Sure it's a little clunky when cold, but it goes away... I am used to driving AWD cars for a looong time now so maybe that's just what you have to get used to... Remember, you're moving a lot of parts now.. It's not just a FWD or RWD anymore... Try giving it just a little bit of juice right before letting the clutch out.. That should help some.. I trained myself to do that a long time ago when I got a VPC for my GSX.. It had such a slight delay in throttle response, so I had to juice it a little for slow smooth shifts... My .02 for ya...

I am having no troubles shifting from 1st to 2nd. The shift goes rather easily I think.

My problem has been me trying to unlearn a shifting habit I acquired while owning the Type R. With the Evo I have to be very deliberate about going from neutral to 1st. Push to the left, then up....With the Type R I could just move the shifter diagonally up and to the left....When I do this with the Evo, I just end up in 3rd....which is not the ideal gear to start from a dead stop. huhu...bog.

I think I was the one who posted about the 1-2 shift.. I know for a fact it was me.. The gears are very fast, and timing is everything, I can say that the clutch requires more pedal to fully release which causes me to miss the 1-2 shift. Full engagement/disengagement on my old car (a 91 corvette, and a 97 z-28) was within 2 inches, not only that, but a power shift was easier because of the type of synchros, if you leaned on the shifter without pushing it, it would want to jump into gear. With the RPM's of this tranny, and the 'cog-like' feel of the synchros, its pretty obvious that RPM Matching is much more important, you just can't ham-fist it into gear, however a light touch and enough pedal disengagement will cause it to go in alot easier. It just makes power-shifting a little tricky because of the desire to find the gear as hard and as fast as you can..

I have ground it twice.
I was at 7000rpm going into second.

With other cars I have owned the clutch pedal did not have to be on the floor. I guess I got lazy or sloppy driving those cars. This clutch has to be all the way down to the carpet at 7000rpm. I am used to barely hitting the clutch.

Maybe with the short stroke it is going in gear faster than I expect it to.(?)

PS I have been driving manual longer than Mary Kate has been alive

I've done the same thing a few times. Engaging 1st gear from a stop is a little different than the other cars I've owned.
So far no problems on the 1-2 shift but I haven't tried any real high rpm power shifting yet.

I guess this just means we're driving a different animal.. I've been driving stick cars, from econoboxes, muscle cars, to exotic, since 1985.. I have to admit that the AWD gearbox is taking the most getting used to. I think someone said it right, its just not as sloppy as most other trannys..

Hm, I noticed the 1st gear thing too. Shifting is definitely a lot notchier on this gearbox under load than I'm used to. Does it loosen up after a couple hundred miles?

Anyway, I guess I'll drive around some more and see if I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. My guess is either the speed at which I'm releasing the clutch, or as Jonasan said, to give it a little gas..

I find I get a crunching sound/feel when I go from 2 to 3rd.

I have been more mindful of putting the clutch pedal all the way to the floor, and it seems to be fine. Maybe Im not engaging the clutch enough when shifting?

Does anyone else have this problem/situation?

How tall are you guys with these problems?? Im 6'1" When I sat in the US evo and put the clutch all the way to the floor it was easy. Whats the highest speed that you can still get first to engage at???In my maxima I can put it in first from anygear as long as im not going faster than about 30 MPH.

I'm 5'8", but I don't think my problem has to do with putting the clutch all the way in. It's more about precisely getting into 2nd gear smoothly (it still jerks ever so slightly every now and then), which I seem to be having all sorts of trouble with. The shift goes smoothly about 50% of the time now, but I don't seem to be doing anything different. Sometimes it engages faster and when it does it turns out fine, but when it's slow and I give it more gas than I should, the car jolts a little when it gets into gear.

anybody ever think that mary-kates acts like a beotch sometimes the guy's looking for help and says he knows how to drive the stick which is the easiest thing to do once you get practice. then she comes up and tries to cut his legs out from under him. sorry i know it's OT but when someone is looking for help you don't slam em like that
