For the remote starter to work, the car must be running when the door is closed and alarm set. If you open the door, hood, or trunk afterward, it will not remote start.
Also, if the alarm is set off, you can't start the car, even with a key until you reset it with the remote, even if you disconnect the battery for 5 minutes (I tried it to see for myself).
