First trip to the drags EVO IX Tucson

Just wanted to say hey, to the evo game, not to cars. I am very impressed with my IX's performance thus far. I went to the drags in Tucson this weekend, which is not known for being a quick track. It was 80+ degrees and there was a strong crosswind from the east. I only made two passes before being shut down. I ran a 13.7 @98.0 first pass with a 2.1 60' then a 13.60 at 99.0 with a 2.0 60'. The clutch is weird on this car as it does not disengage as fast under load as it feels it should. Seems the warranty guys specd a soft clutch. The car had just over 1200 miles on it., I can't llaunch as hard as my old wrx which ran 1.8 60' times at the same track. For comparison, I ran my roomates 04 STI same 2.0 60', last year in Jan, but high 50s temp wise, no wind and got a 14.15 @ 95.64. Better conditions, slower times. Not ******* the Subie, I had one and Carlos, I am the guy that ran the 13.90 in the blue WRX last year that broke fisrt gear. I did the 6 spd swap but due to some marital issues I had to sell the Subie. Just wanted to say hi and say all in all I am very impressed with the EVO. I also won a local auto-x event on Sunday. in Sierra Vista(novice) But there was a small turnout.

At first, I was going to say those traps seem to be really low, but when you mentioned that STi of what it trapped, I guess it makes sense. Congratulations though.

At what rpm did you shift at? Also what rpm did you launch at? Also was this a completely stock evo9?

Completely stock ,it was hot, we have 91 octane and very windy, the local drag guys said .3 and 3-4 miles per hour slower than normal with the wind, etc. I shifted right at indicated redline first run, about 7300-7400 indicated second. It was trapping in 4th gear probably 6700-6800 rpm at the end. The launch was at 5000(at the mandated limiter) but it will make some boost (about .5 on factory gauge) with the clutch in. There is and will be no clutch "dump" in this car, but a very quick lift, like stepping in dog poop. I have broken one WRX tranny and do not want to relive that experience. The clutch still feels like it should disengage quicker, it holds fine in all the other gears. I can post the info on the times slips if anyone wants to analyze.

Run 1 2
R/T .406 -.039(broke out)
60' 2.140 2.073
330 5.764 5.681
1/8 8.828 8.730
mph 80.05 80.72
1000 11.504 11.388
1/4 13.762 13.637
mph 98.08 98.54

Was going to run again, but did not have helmet, safety jacket, etc. Just wanted a baseline before mods.

If you can manage to lower your 60ft, you should be able to hit low 13's.

Yeah, the clutch is kinda soft, but that's mainly due to the rubber clutch line and the huge clutch restrictor in the slave cylinder. We do have the 5k limiter, but you can disconnect that or just use it as launch control. The 2.0 60's are not due to the clutch, though. Many, many people have run 1.7s and a few have even high 1.6s, so I think you need to get back out there and practice before mods, because that wasn't a great baseline.

Also, familiarize yourself with our drag racing forum. That is where we discuss this great form of racing.

you can put in a ss clutch line and @ the same time take out the restrictor and that will greatly improve the clutch feel and release

How are you?, this is Carlos, I knew I remember that name from before.. How can I forget the day that you broke your tranny. I just met you about 3-4 minutes before your run and I told you:

Be very carefull, you are in risk of breaking your tranny!! about 3 minutes later there you were with the broken tranny at the track and had to be towed...

isn't amazing.. I told you my history of my two broken trannys on my WRX and as I finished telling you it was time for you to break yours as well...

Yeah, I followed your ordeal, you took your car to Kingpin and it was there for months, I actually told you that I got my use tranny from Kingpin.

Today, I am happy to have you making this topic, I have been trying to brain wash everyone to really know how hard is to run fast at SIR. Yes I do remember your roomate white STI running low 14's until you did the 13.8.

As you can see , even with the Evo 9 it is still hard to get good times at SIR. I took the Evo 9 once and the rev limiter kicked in casuing me a 2.5sec 60' which is unheard on me, my times were 14.2 @100 .

Definately pm me and we can go to the track together. Did you have ECUTEK and exhaust in your blue WRX?. Regardless, I am double happy for you because your Evo 9 is a much better car that what you were driving before, no doubt.

Your times are good, you are no a noobie driver nor you did the best 60 times but I think you could drop a couple of tenth next time. Good job though!!

Carlos

I had APS uppipe, unichip, perrin down pipe, aps catback, drop in filter in my wrx. Dynocomp tuned at 215 whp. Kingpin did a goodjob, but SLOW. One of my coworkers has the Subie, 6 spd still going strong. I am still trying to learn this forum though, will take awhile but I plan on keeping the EVO for a long time., barring some unforseen disaster. Hey Carlos, remember the maroon camaro, my other coworker from last year as well? We lined up when I drove the STI. we lined up again on accident, he ran a 15.40 against my 13.60, was cool, i looked out my side mirror and he was smoking the tires at 1/2 track. He left, bought newer rear tires and came back to run 14.33. I am also interested in the tuning session, met Holt in S.V. When you put it together let me know.

Great. Yes, I do remember the guy with the Camaro, he was trapping very high though. He was a older guy and he refused to tell me what he had..

As far is the tunning, definately you are in. I have toget with you so you can drive the Evo 9 on my signature, it is fast with the Dynoflash tunning, 3"tb, MBC and air filter.

I am on leave but I will be running the Evo 9 at SIR the very next time. Your 6 speed conversion was a big waste, I tried to save all the WRX owners from falling deep in to the black hole. The WRX can not compete with the STI or Evo.

Just for the record, my WRX ran 13.2@104 at SIR and put 280whp/255tq on a Dyno Dynamic Dyno..

And on the clutch, just never had one where you are all the way out of it and it still slips for another second, I did consistant 1.8 60' in my wrx, and the evo is definitely stronger and hooks better. Just a different feeling. The 2.0 60' time i ran in my buddies STI was after breaking my tranny, so it was a very conservative launch. It just seems something is a little off, like there is some drag or air in the system. I am going to do the search on the line and restrictor, I did the line on my old 90 DSM but am not familiar with the restrictor. I also ran 1.79 60' times in my old GSX Eclipse.

He still traps over 101 in his camaro out there, I have never seen him run faster than 14.3, or better than 2.4 60'. I have known him for 8.5 years, we have worked together and ridden motrorcycles and played with cars the whole time and he has yet to tell me what he has done to any of his vehicles. He also refused to believe my RS is completely stock. We weghed the cars after the run and the EVO w/o spare tire or jack, and 1/2 tank came in between 3112 and 3120, because the wind was blowing so hard, the scale would not settle. The camaro w spare tire, etc and just under 1/2 tank was 3520.

You and me had identical cars in the past: WRX, Eclipses Turbos, Evos and you also mention you have a motorcycle, I do to. What other cars have you had?
