Just like everyone else....

I've been reading this site for a couple of weeks, and it saddens me to see that I am just part of the herd. And all this time I thought I was my own person!

I too am looking at the STI and the EVO.

I just sold my '78 911SC to get a more practical car that would still allow me to go to the road course 6 or 7 times per year. Naturally these two come to mind. I've driven both, and was impressed with both.

My concern....dependability when driven hard for an extended period.

Can any of you give me your experiences with driving the EVO between 4 and 6 thousand RPM's for an hour at a time?

I wouldn't intend to make any changes in the car...also I'm probably a little older than most of you (late 50's), so would the car be comfortable as a casual daily driver?

To be honest i see teh STi as more of a daily driver. The power is generally there when you need it with very little lag, the evo has a bit more lag, but way more potential in stock form. I feel that you would be more suited for the STi.

If you are looking for comfort buy the STI. No cruise controll on an evo (though you can add it aftermarket). The suspension on the evo is far bumpier.

Get the MR, put some good pads on it, brake air guides, and the ss lines. She ill be good for mild track days and a nice daily driver.

Sounds like you need an Audi A4.

I'm sorry, I'm in my late 50's, I'm not dead yet When I go go the track it's not for a MILD day

And the old 911 was't exactly a soft ride....

I'm mostly interested in the EVO's ability to withstand a sustained period under boost without causing releability issues.

I'm retired, ergo, no daily grinds to the office....so I guess I'm asking if it's a reasonable car for occasionally running around town or the short jaunt of a couple of hundred miles.....for fun?

thanks

Well, in THAT case. Dont you dare step foot on a subbie dealers lot. Evo ALL THE FREGGIN WAY. The Evo has the potential on stock turbo that the sti guys couldnt dream of! If you want a truly fun car that looks great (IMO) and performance great the evo is the only option out of the two mention above.

the choice is not based on car, it's based on handling & corner exit speed. on those factors alone, the evo wins hands down. the sti requires eariler turn-in since it understeers more than the evo (that's why a got the evos). the evo understeers as well, but a rear sway bar, endlinks, & a rear strut brace will remedy that. the STI is more reliable from a daily driver perspective & subaru actually encourages owners to sign up for SCCA. if an evo signs up for SCCA, your warranty is automatically VOIDED!!!!!!!!!!!

I know a couple of people with 40+ trackdays on their evos and have no problems. But you must do your maintenance twice as much. change oil every 2k miles, all fluids at 7.5k etc... Get your car inspected each season to check nuts and bolts.
