Transfer Case Problems????

Hello All,

I have been a member here for awhile and I see quite a lot of transfer case issues. I myself, have never had the issue, and none of my friends with them have either. Is this a secluded thing and only 5 people have had this problem and they just keep talking about it? Which one? Personally, my Evo has been trouble free with just daily driving and not too hard of play time. What are everyone elses experiences with the transfer case and just flat out reliability?

It's usually only a problem for people who like to drop their clutch.

Thats probably why you dont have any issues. Mine's broke because I beat the snot out of the car on a regular basis.

I guess what I am saying is...should I expect problems sooner or later, or is the car super tough/reliable if you just treat it right? It appears to me, that every owner runs into some problems on a daily basis....so am I just lucky so far, or if I treat the car nice, it will treat me nice in return?

I run mine hard almost every weekend but take it easy on daily routines. Mine's an 03 and has it since it first came to US. Still on stock TC and tranny except for Exedy twin. Just don't do dumb hthigns with it and you'll be fine. And I broke into 11s a good while ago.

Most problems are with stock 03 t-cases. You have a IX, so I wouldn't worry if I were you, especially if you don't beat on it. Should be fine.

Mine is an '03 with 50k miles and no problems at all. I've taken to the track several times (road course) and the thing is solid as rock.

If you do a search you'll find a ton of historical information, with most of the problems concentrating around the 03 and early 04 models.

The short answer is you never really bust the transfer case or the gearing inside it. You bust the Front Differential which is surprisingly inside the transfer case. As I think all the IXes come with Limited Slip Front Diffs. they're more robust and you shouldn't have problems like the earlier USDM VIIIs.

Cheers,

~j.

Well, I can tell you that the 03's seemed to have the most problems. I owned an 03 for 2 1/2 years and put close to 50,000 miles on it. I went through two TC's. I did track the car, but never dropped the clutch. I have not heard of to many people having problems with the 04's and up. The first TC was replaced because they could not remove the imput shaft when they were installing my clutch. It was bent. I think the second TC took a crap because Mitsubishi put the wrong gear oil in it. It only lasted 10,000 miles. Last time I ever had them put the oil in it. I would not worry to much about the TC unless you are tracking the car often and or having Mitsubishi replace your gear oil.

Dido to J8. I lost my transfer case after Mitsu changed my gear oil with the crap they put in the regular lancer. It ended up "a bearing went bad" issue and they replaced it under warranty. Otherwise, my '03 is rock solid...

I bought mine in 03 and havent had any problems at all. I track the car all summer, drag strip and autoxx, this summer will be actually track racing. I dont beat the car but I do drive it hard. 1.75-1.8 60' at the track and no broken parts. IMO if you maintain your car correctly you shouldnt have any problems.

Hi Guys,
I just got a call from the dealers today saying my part has arrived. I had no clue of what he was talking about. I just got my car back after the first oil change at 2800, it has around 3200 miles on it now. when I dropped my car in for the first service I complained about the famous creaking noise from the windshield, the service guy claims that the noise is actually being caused by a faulty transfer case. He says since the transfer case is faulty it is causing the windshiled to vibrate and cause the noise. Guys I am new here, do you think what the service guy is saying is true? I was upset, the car is only 3 months old and is already giving me problems.
I am taking it in on Tuesday to have them replace the transfer case. What could be so screwed up in the transfer case that is causing the windshield to vibrate? I haven't been pushing the car much as it is in the break period. Please share your input on this issue.
Thanks in advance.

That sounds like BS to me, but if you can get a new free tranny why not lol?

IMO if the car runs fine and is smooth then its not broken.
