Ever Done a long "Break-in Drive?"

OK, I've had my new IX SSL now for a week and a half but my commute is short and I have only 230 miles on the clock. I know that some people don't believe in the break-in period and some do, but I'm following the owner's manual, which says to keep it under five grand for the first 600 miles. (So far, I've been pretty good about it. Sometimes I give it close to full throttle, but I up-shift at about five grand when I do. I am also shifting a lot and varying the engine speed constantly.)

Anyway, it's freaking killing me waiting to get 600 miles, and I'm tempted to go for a long drive, like out in the country, just to get past the break-in. If I can sneak off for three or four hours this weekend, I was thinking I might just drive up to the Sierras and tool around for a while just to get some miles. I would love to get home, check the odometer, and see that I was past 600.

Anyhow, stupid question I know, but I was just curious whether any of you guys have ever made such a trip for the sole purpose of having fun and breaking in the engine.

I bought my Evo IX last Friday. I drove it 1500 miles that weekend to get it back to Seattle from Costa Mesa, California. I'd say that qualifies as a long break-in. I don't seem to be suffering any bad effects for it.

I'd suggest changing the oil after the break-in, though. The engine leaves behind a lot of particles during the break-in.

When I got my first Evo, I lived 1.5 miles from work. I went on drives out on country 2-lane roads after work to get miles on the car and get past the break-in. That was actually pretty fun, I just pointed the car a direction and drove, and turned onto any road that looked interesting. At some point I'd turn around and find my way home.

I bought my car in Orlando, FL and drove it to Louisville, Ky the same day. Somewhere in Tn I hit 600 miles and the pedal hit the floor going through the mountains. I just kept it under 5k while under 600 miles and tried to vary the speed as much as I could on the interstate without pissing off everyone in the world.

I say go for it.

I bought my 06 MR on the 9th of march and only have 212 miles on it right now. Talk about super slow break in. I would have got over the 600 miles but here in MN, weather are constanly changing so I dont want to run in the snow or rain yet!!

Yesterday I put on the new Donald Fagen album (phenomenal, as he always is) and drove up Highway 168 into the Sierras. As I started out, a gray Carrera GT came down out of the hills and drove past me in the other direction, howling like a banshee. Blew my small mind.

For the first 8 miles or so I had the highway to myself and hit the turns with some alacrity, but not crazy fast. It was just very nice not being stuck behind anyone.

I turned off on a country road and wound up in a valley I'd never seen, with all sorts of tiny country roads and oak-covered hills, a lot of pastures, farms scattered about. Dropped down through another valley on an extremely narrow mountain road skirted with rocks. Just gorgeous.

I was afraid someone would come blasting up the road toward me and we'd have nowhere to pass each other, but that never happened. Beautiful drive; I only wish I'd stopped and taken some pictures. I may go up next weekend.

The car was a delight: I love those seats, and the upgraded stereo sounded terrific.

Eventually I shut off the music and just listened to the engine, which has that high metallic whine a bit like an air-cooled mill. When I had to pass anyone it was just a rush and a blur, and going into the turns was ridiculously effortless; I just went as fast as I was comfortable and I'm sure the car was laughing at me.

Put about 85 miles on the car. (Now there are only about 170 left before the engine is officially broken in at 600 miles.)

I drove my Evo around LA for about 1300 miles and then this past weekend i drove to Las Vegas which is about 300 miles each way. I drove it easy during the first 1300 miles and the drive to Vegas was pretty hard with long durations of high speed at a consistant RPM. I never noticed how loud the engine was until i drove for about 100 miles at 110mph with two fools sleeping in the back seat and my other buddy unable to sleep riding shotgun. I stomped the brakes one time due to traffic and the guy behind me hit his head on the back of my seat.... it was GOLDEN!!!
