weight of intercoolers

is there a good replacement for stock that is lightweight? Or what are the weights of aftermarket intercoolers?

If you are comparing one against another of the same type go with the lighter one. It will almost always be a better heat exchanger.

I really have never thought about the weight of the intercooler. I just shop around to see the results and how they preform on the car.

Upgraded intercoolers are usually MUCH, MUCH heavier than stock. That's one of the trade-offs with a larger FMIC. Don't upgrade it unless you have an upgraded turbo or every mod possible on the stock turbo while pushing mega boost with alky or race gas daily (or if your stocker is damaged).

do you think I shouldn't have got one?

My mods (all still to be fitted):

10.5 hotside
Works O2 housing
Works TBE
Works 269 cams, Springs and retainers
Works Flash (P2e)
Works BOV
AMS cooler
Nisei intercooler pipes and mini battery kit
Ralliart thermostat
Psi3 Single DIN data monitor (similar to the EcuTek one)
Defi boost, oil press and temp sensors (to go with the Psi3)
O2 fix (mechanical)
Walbro 255 pump

summer temps get to 85-95 deg F.

Mike

Not really, since you're running regular boost on pump gas. It may come in handy if you regularly road race in those hot summer temps.

I think that the heavier the intercooler - the more material the better (if the intercooler is built well and flows smoothly). If you have a lighter intercooler to replace your stock unit I can bet you will reach heat soak much faster.

Why are you asking that? FMICs aren't light and are not the sort of thing people use for comparison when discussing FMICs. You should be asking which one cools the best.

I heard the AMS one is 21 pounds, this was from someone here who put it on the scale. I have the Greddy R spec and it weighs 12 pounds..very light and close to the stocks weight. For the weight and price it cant be beat. I bought mine for $810 and it comes with lower ic pipes. Heavier doesnt always mean its better, im sure there are ones out there that are heavy as hell and dont work so well

in an attempt to balance power and control any addition of weight to the front of the car needs to be well thought out.
adding twenty lb to the very front of the car has disadvantages too.
