I get what you're thinking is here but a lighter intercooler (especially a tube fin like the stocker) will heat soak much faster and will not cool as well as the heavier bar and plate designs of most aftermarket FMICs. You're right about a larger core retaining heat longer once it reaches heat soak but many of the larger FMIC's on the market rarely ever get to that point for a number of reasons (surface area of the core, material, cooling efficiency, etc...)

in any kind of heat exchanger, you want to maximise the surface area, minimise mass/material. you want to get rid of heat..therefore lighter, less thermal mass is better.

A lighter FMIC will allow it to heat soak much faster. The heavier the FMIC material is enables it to resist heat soak much better. Unless you plan to pre-heat your FMIC then a heavier one will function much better. If you have a large surface area and a heavy FMIC, chances are you will not soak the FMIC.
