evo viii/02 firebird ws6 ram air. drag strip
I've only driven an evo once and it was at the dealer and he wouldn't let me open it up so it was kind of bitersweet. Anyway, my friend has a 01 firebird ws6 ram air. I think it's rated at about 365hp. Now i've driven that thing and it's an absoloute missile. Real intense, at least for me. Now i'm not trying to compare 2 completely different cars here but here is my question, for anyone who knows
- Does the evo give the same rush of accel as the ws6?
- is it rated faster in a straight line? (obvoiusly evo will murder it in the twisties)
The reason i'm asking is because i'd like to know if the evo really feels that fast, and if in fact it does have the same or better 0-60 or quart mile times as the ram air, wow. Especially with the handling and braking aspect.
please, no flames. I know it's a muscle car i'm comparing but it's the fastest car i've driven. Thank you

They feel completely different. One has a linear power curve with long gearing while the other has an immediate torque spike that feels fast, but then dies off as the rpms rise. I'm sure you can find 0-60 and 1/4-mile times for both online, right? You can also see all of our results in the drag racing section.

interesting I found this thread. I am going to race my viii against my friend's 0 trans am ws6 when the track here opens. He has some mods, and I am completely stock. I know it is not a fair race but it is all in good fun. The ws6 has an initial bite but then dies off, but feel the bit in twisties. Both great cars i think

The timing of this thread is funny. My brother was in town last week and stayed at my house. I let him drive the Evo whenever we went out. His pride and joy in life is his '68 Buick Skylark GS400. It's about 90% restored. That 4,000lb+ car did a 13.2 at 3k+ feet of elevation in the high desert so it's quick. It has a stroked 400ci (displacing about 420ci), big cam, high rise intake, a big 850cfm Carter, etc, etc. Looks like the kind of engine you see in Hot Rod or Car Craft magazine.
He used to own an 1G AWD DSM. First thing he says when he gets on the boost in my Evo is "oh man, I totally forgot how good that feels". He was loving it. He compared it to a slingshot and his Buick to a sudden jolt because of its instaneous power delivery. The power was half the fun though man. He had two hands on the steering wheel like a race car driver and was zipping all over the place like a crazy man. The Evo may not have the ***** to the wall power of your buddy's WS6 out of the box, but it's an all around better performing car. Most of those V8 muscle cars, including the modern LS1 Camaros and Transams, just don't handle that well.
