Orange County Dealer Experiences

I've been looking around Orange County Mitsu delaers for an EVO 8 but won't pay over MSRP, so as yet I am still EVO-less. But during my trails I have had all kinds of spiel thrown at me - like they're only making 1,600, or with another dealer its 4000 etc etc.
Most interesting remark was that the dealers know about the EVO blacklist and so they between them they decided to lower their mark up to 5k instead of 10k !

Congratulations to the list for this !!!

I reckon with some time that will come down to MSRP or less.

In addition to the boycott list I was wondering if all the list members would pool the sales tactics being used on them, then when any o us go into the dealers from now on, we would be just that little bit more prepared ??

For example I was told Mitsu would make only 1600 and so EVO 8 was limited edition - I've read various reports from 4 to 6 k as predicted volume, but also reports that like the WRX when it first came out subaru said they would only make 5k, in fact they sold 15k?? the first year. Any comments ?

Also one delaer told me the story of someone from the bay area paid the sticker price no haggling and even had a truck sent down to fetch it ! I apprecite the feeling of wanting the car, but this sounds like more money than sense to me. Or even just propaganda - like "Hey look, if someone is prepared to go to these lengths, why are you siting here haggling with me ! Pay the MASSIVE mark up god damn it !"

Another war story was that the EVO 8 sold by Santa Monica went for 22k? over MSRP, "because up there 50k plus is peanuts for such a "SUPERCAR".

Anybody else any interesting "one liners" ???

The Santa Monica dealer told me that some guy walked in and paid a $15k markup on an Evo for his son. Supposedly his son couldn't even drive a stick, his brother had to come pick it up for him.
I think if you really wanted one, Santa Monica might be able to do MSRP. The last time I was in there, the guy said $33k and that was just in casual conversation. I think if you walked in ready to haggle and deal, you could probably get it for MSRP..

aaron,

this is what I mean about the hype / propaganda. I was told by an OC dealer that Santa Monica Mitsu weren't allocated ANY EVO 8's and so they phoned up the OC dealer paid the whopping mark up to the OC dealer to sell to their customer in Beverly Hills or wherever.

So if what I was told was true, Santa Monica wouldn't be able to do MSRP because they have to buy it off other Mitsu dealers in So Cal who have an allotment of EVO's and of course those dealers want MSRP + 5k and up min.

Like I said, if we all pool our "war stories" we might be able sort the crap from reality and get a better picture of what the real situation is.

couple of my friends visited the santa monica dealer, they did have the $20k markup...however, by just a little chatting with the sales, they bring the price down to $3k markup...so i guess aaron is right...if you walked in ready to deal...you should be able to get MSRP.

Good Luck

Well - I got mine from the Tuttle-Click dealership in Irvine and got the 5k, but after their compromises on the trade-in, extended warranty, and Pit-Pass, it came out to more like 3k over. They still have the Blue one sitting on their lot waiting for someone to grab it. I would have thought they'd been willing to deal on it - especially given Mitsubishi's announcement regarding the unlimited availability of the vehicle.

Believe it or not - the dealership even called me while I was at the Mitsubishi shoot in Irwindale and asked them if i was still interested in getting an Evo. I politely told them I was still enjoying the one they'd sold me a couple of weeks prior. It seems to me that that level of desperation in locating a buyer would increase their willingness to bargain (back to MSRP!).

Or not.

zx6r, I think your OC dealer is lying to you.
I really don't know but my guesstimate is that Santa Monica probably sells quite a few cars considering it's location and the surrounding areas. I would be surprised if they really didn't get any cars allocated to them.
Good luck on your search and keeps us updated. I might be seriously shopping for one myself soon..

nynguah,

Thx for the info. When did you talk to Tuttle Click ? I was in there last week negotiated a bit for the blue one. They wouldn't come down to MSRP, so said bye bye. The next day they called me up saying the blue one was gone but they have a red one, and "what do they need to do to get me to buy it". Simple quote me MSRP, they said no thanks.

aaron,
>zx6r, I think your OC dealer is lying to you.
that doesn't surprise me. But it's nice to know when they are bluffing ( lying ) and when not.

The more we pool our common knowledge the stronger our bargaining power becomes !

Hey zx6r - I haven't been by for a week, so I didn't realize they'd sold the blue one. One of the sales folks had a buyer all lined up for the red one, so I'm surprised it's still on the lot. My guess is he found someone to sell it to him for MSRP. Good for you for sticking to your guns though.

I'm not endorsing them by any means, I just couldn't wait to get mine, and after some serious haggling, we worked something out that I could live with - 3k premium for being one of the first EVOs in OC was worth it for me!

zx6r,

In all my dealings with the dealer I could tell when he is lying. Whenever his lips move.

Heh, if it wasn't for socal dealers, I might've had an EVO about 2 weeks ago.

As it is, I can play the waiting game, and going to Mitsubishi dealers in socal to talk to them about an EVO makes me sick to my stomach.

Here's several lines that I've gotten first hand:

1) "We have a guy from "Name-Goes-Here" who wants ten of them and is offering $35k each."

Me: Right. And why have only 2 of your 8 Evo's sold over the past month?

2) "We received a letter from Mitsubishi telling us to mark up at least $5k over sticker. All dealers received this letter therefore you won't find a better deal anywhere else."

Me: Sure. Tell that to the dealership 50 miles West of here who allocated one for me at MSRP.

3) "Just wait until "2 Fast and 2 Furious" comes out. These things will fly off the lot. If they don't sell now, they'll sell after the movie."

Me: Okaaaay.... So if 30-somethings cannot afford the Evo with your $5k markup, how are the hyped-up 17 year olds going to afford them? That and I'm skeptical that the movie will make a significant impact on the Evo sales.

4) "We did look at the "dealers selling at MSRP" list that you gave us and there was *one* that was selling their Evo's at MSRP. We bought them all so where are you going to go now?"

Me: Hmmmm..... let me think. It sure the hell won't be your dealership!

5) "Okay, we're willing to work with you since you're a serious buyer. Let me talk to our sales manager and see what we can do. We'll get back to you ASAP!"

Me: You told me that over a week ago right? Oops, I forgot and put a deposit on one for MSRP at a more reputable dealership the day after you gave me that line!

Zero point.....someone actually fed you that line? #4 specifically? crazy!

nynguah....where did you get your info regarding the unlimited availability of the Evo? That line seems to be nothing more than internet rumor currently.

Yes, all of the above are true. Said dealership also told me that their main goal is to move as many cars as they can. I almost blurted out "so quantity over quality is your motto?"
